Patria D. Harper

Sunrise: September 25, 1964

Sunset: July 27, 2020

Patria was such a fun, loving and gentle spirit who always had a good or encouraging word to share with everybody. She loved the Lord and was always enthusiastic about her Praise and Worship and spreading the gospel. She always said, “My good Lord gon’ take care of me”. She always had time to listen and pray with people. She would welcome you in, or give you her last; you always felt loved and had a good time around Patria.

Patria passed away on Monday, July 27.2020 at the age of 55. She was born on September 25, 1964 to the late Barbara and James Watkins. She was the baby girl, joined by her brother and sister. Patria was a native of Portsmouth, VA, where she attended Manor High School. She was a proud Alumni of Norfolk State University, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Patria retired from the Department of the Navy DLA and spent many years working as a social worker.

Patria had two children, Nikia and Coby (C.J.), she took great pride in raising them and guiding them through life. She loved music, including singing and dancing along, especially to her favorites, Luther Barnes, Brenda Russell and Frankie Beverly and Maze. She was known to break out in a song in the middle of her conversations. Patria also loved playing games with her family and friends, most notably, a good game of spades. Patria was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. She loved to have fun and joke around and was always smiling.

Patria is survived by her children, Nikia Jones and C.J. Harper; grandchildren, Tysen and Raegan Jones; sister, Janis Watkins; brother, Brian Watkins and a host of loving aunts, an uncle, cousins, in-laws and extended family and friends.

There are some people in life that make you LAUGH a little louder, SMILE a little bigger and LIVE just a little bit better.

A bond between mother and child is unparalleled. For a girl, they are that support that is so crucial during those adolescent years. For boys, they are a female presence that teaches love and respect. Mothers provide a shoulder to cry on and are an infinite wealth of advice throughout your life. A mother’s love is unconditional and losing someone like that is never easy. I cannot relate to your feelings of losing your mom, but I pray that you will find some comfort in your fond memories of her and the valuable time spent with her. God shared Patria with us as Parents, Children, Siblings, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends. Let’s give thanks to Him, the Almighty for allowing us to know her. (I’m smiling as she is probably breaking out in song and dance like only she did). May God watch over each of you and provide you with comfort during your most difficult days. Nikia, CJ, Tysen, Raegan, Janice, Brian and the rest of our family let’s keep each other in prayer. ????????❤️ Cousins Ben & Sherryl

“Time is God’s Gift.” We all need time to grieve -quiet time for reflection to sift through memories and come to grips with what has happened. Thank you for the times I was able to see Ms. Patria’s beautiful smile, watch her dance, and feel her embrace in a simple hug. May the family take all the time it needs to heal your hearts. Much love to you and many prayers for you.
