Olynthia A. Smith, affectionately known as “Poochie,” was born on October 31, 1952, to the late Lorraine and Aubrey D. Smith in Norfolk, VA, where she was lovingly raised in the community of Titustown. On the evening of January 15, 2025, at 6:20 P.M., God dispatched His angels to call Poochie home, surrounded by her loved ones and friends.

Poochie began her walk with God at an early age at The Garden of Prayer C.O.G.I.C., under the leadership of the late Bishop L.E. Willis Sr. She later joined in worship at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor William L. Davis, where her faith continued to flourish.

On January 21, 2017, Olynthia married her childhood sweetheart, Floyd “Lil Man” Smith, in a union filled with love and happiness. She attended Norfolk Public Schools and enjoyed a fulfilling career, working at Cinclant Fleet and later at The Virginian-Pilot, where she retired after 20 years of loyal service.

Known for her kindness and generosity, Poochie devoted her life to helping others. It was a pillar of love and support in her community, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorraine and Aubrey D. Smith, and her brothers, Ruben Fires, Bernard D. “Hook” Smith, and Donald B. Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Floyd “Lil Man” Smith; two children, Chandra K. Smith of Norfolk, VA, and Alvin “Laron” (Tara) Smith of Spanish Fort, AL; five grandchildren, Deondrae Smith of Fayetteville, NC, Tiona Smith of Norfolk, VA, Raiynah and Clarissa Smith, both of Portsmouth, VA, and Naveah Williams of Norfolk, VA, and four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Carolyn Johnson, Jacquelyn Fires, Anita Harrell, and Ursula Smith, all of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Calvin T. (Irene) Smith of High Point, North Carolina; special sisters in Christ, Deborah Perry and Pearl Simmons, both of Norfolk, VA; dear friends, Carolyn “Spooda” Harris and Veronica “Ronnie” Thompson, both of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

    Growing up, Olynthia was a dear sweet family friend. We were neighbors, and yes she did have an infectious smile, that would light up the sky.
