McCoy attended and graduated from the Perquimans Union School of Perquimans County. McCoy was employed with McLean Construction of Fairfax Virginia as a foreman.

McCoy was married to the late Mabel F. Modlin, who was the love of his life. He joined the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the late Bishop I. Joseph Williams in 1974 and was a member for 45 years.

McCoy was a member of the male choir, the unity choir, the men’s biblical study class, and the regular Wednesday evening bible study group. He also served on the male usher board as the Vice-Ministry Leader.

He was a model citizen and a respected part of his community. Neighbors would look forward to his daily neighborhood checks as he drove through to make sure all was well. One of his favorite things to do was sing and play Bid Whisk. He was known as “BIG BASS” in the choir and his favorite song was “ My God Is Real”.

McCoy was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Beulah Modlin, sister, Mildred M. Lightfoot, brother, James Modlin Sr., and wife Mabel Modlin, where they all await with open arms.

My grandmother Mary Pender was great friend with Mr Heavy and Mrs. Mable I fondly remember them both being at all of our family functions and our family at their home they always had a smile and a hug for you. They could keep you laughing just watching the adults playing cards and the conversations. My mother just mentioned yesterday when we found out of Mr. Heavys passing that he was the last of the Mohicans, yes they were a tribe, there had to be about 12 if not more of them on the weekends. Love you Mr Heavy and kiss Mrs. Mable and grandma for me.

Life is fragile; Loss is so sudden. We don’t, and may never understand God’s plan. Moreover, the solace we seek may not even come from answers. Instead, we should look for comfort in love’s everlasting connections. God makes no mistakes! He knows when his children need rest. I now ask God to strengthen and comfort your family. I know he will dry tears and heal broken hearts for, “earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal”. Have faith and be strong. God holds everything we need in his hands. Let’s look to him at this time. You shall never walk alone as long as you have God on your side. We hold everybody deep in our heart, and we want the entire family to know that you guys are all in our thoughts. “Be encouraged and know that God holds him in his arms.
