Odell Virginia Hamlin Jones, 92, born on January 14, 1933, in Emporia, Virginia to the late Collin Hamlin and Helen Ferguson.
Odell was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great – great grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She was a founding member of Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church with her late husband, Pastor Wilbert Jones Sr. The first meeting was held in their home in June 1962. In August 1963, CEBC was organized and established. After 19 years of faithful service to the students at Portsmouth Public Schools, she retired on May 30, 1991.
Odell was highly active and involved with ministries. She conducted the Good News Club for the children in her neighborhood for many years. She also led Women Bible Studies and spoke at countless Women Conferences. She was always willing to share the gospel to whoever would listen.
Odell was predeceased by her husband, Pastor Wilbert Jones Sr.; her brother, Fred Hamlin; her sisters, Sarah Short and Elsie Jones; and her son, Jerome Jones Sr. Left to cherish her loving memory is her daughter, Freida Boone of Chesapeake, Virginia; her sons, Wilbert Jones Jr. and Alvin Jones (Paula) of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Samuel Jones (June) of Chesapeake, Virginia; 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Amy Jones of Indianapolis, Indiana, a host of nieces and nephews, and friends.
