Ocia Ola Evans Whitmore entered into eternal rest, unexpectedly, after a brief illness, on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the age of 74. Her life was a testament to kindness, strength, and devotion to her family and friends.
Born on Wednesday, November 15, 1950, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to Ambrose and Margaret Evans, Ocia spent her early years surrounded by the love of her siblings and family. She graduated from P.W Moore High School. She retired from USUI International in 2006 as a Technical Engineer.
Alphonza Whitmore and Ocia Evans met at a baseball game. Enamored by one another, Ocia married the love of her life, Alphonza Whitmore Jr., on August 27, 1977. Together, they raised their two sons, Alphonza Whitmore III and Brian Whitmore, along with their grandchildren, Aaliyah and Sterling Whitmore. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always putting them first. She was always willing to be their confidant and provide guidance to her children.
She walked in faith as a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Greenbrier Congregation. She shared her faith with those who were open and supported the door-to-door ministry.
She deeply enjoyed sewing, gardening, shopping, watching Judge Judy, and collecting bells and aprons. She shared her hobbies with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Spending time with her close friends and family can be seen as her passion, speaking regularly with each of them. For those who know her, she was always fashion-forward, from the top of her head to the sole of her feet. Not only did she dress herself up, but delighted in dressing her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and others when given the opportunity to support them by attending various engagements and other events. All while being a food connoisseur truly moved her through and through causing her to dance with joy.
Ocia was preceded in death by her father, Ambrose Evans, Jr., and mother, Margaret Evans. She leaves to cherish her loving husband, Alphonza Whitmore Jr.; sons, Alphonza Whitmore III and Brian E. Whitmore; grandchildren, Aaliyah R. Whitmore and Sterling E. Whitmore; sisters, Silowetta Deloatch and Claudenette (Mikki) Evans; mother-in-law, Dorothy Whitmore, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins. Special friend, Barabra Harris.
Ocia will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

January 31, 2025 at 4:24 pmMay God comfort you all and fill you with His peace. I am thankful for the opportunity to have known Aunt OC – from getting to experience her infectious joy (like how she’d hum and dance while making a sandwich in a way that made you want to join in on the party), to tagging along when she and my mom went out to eat, to our phone chats – and for the decades of friendship she and my mom have shared. She had a way of making you feel special and loved. She will be deeply missed.

January 31, 2025 at 10:55 pmMy friend, my friend, how dare you leave me. You promised that we would laugh and laugh for years to come from our simple endeavors. Only you could make an outing of Golden Corral, a movie and a trip to Walmart an adventure.
I’ve lost count on how many times you and Fonza literally “saved” me. I promise from here on, as you would so often tell me, to put on my “big girl ____” and keep it moving in your absence. To the family, I honestly feel your pain.

February 3, 2025 at 2:45 amTo Alfonzo and Family:
Sincere love, prayers and condolences are extended to each and all of you at this most difficult time. “Ocie,” as many of us called her, and I go way back to our childhood days in Elizabeth City, NC. Though we were apart for years, we were always good friends, and were thrilled to get back together when I moved to Chsapeake, VA in 2021. We shared many serious and fun times together that I will never forget. Her death has truly crushed my heart, but I look forward to our grand reunion in Paradise when she will awaken once again. February 3, 2025 at 10:21 amWhen my husband put his phone on the table and turned to me what his lips said and the far away look in his eyes spoke volumes about the affect that Ocia kind and concerning ways had made on his life. It was Ocia as I was told that called the EMT’S when all the guys that was playing cards last year and my husband began to show symptoms of a stroke, she insisted that they call the EMT to check him out. After all he was in her home and I would’ve done the same if it was you Fonza! RIP Ocia you will truly be missed! The Blys

February 3, 2025 at 6:02 pmI had the pleasure of meeting Ocie many years ago through our mutual friend, Rosie. For a few years, Ocie and I collaborated to trace her North Carolina roots. This was long before the rise of DNA testing and its widespread use in ancestry research. Throughout our interactions, Ocie was always a joy to be around. Her warm smile and friendly wave never failed to brighten my day whenever we crossed paths. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.
