Norma Dolores Whitaker

Norma Dolores White Whitaker was born on Friday, July 18, 1930, to her adoring parents James and Mable White Sr. in Norfolk, VA. Norma was the youngest of four siblings who predeceased her, Webster White (Doris), Edward White, James White, Jr., and Lavenia White.

Norma grew up in Norfolk and was educated in Norfolk public schools. Norma entered the workforce at an early age and retired from the banking industry after 25 years of service. Additionally, Norma served her community for over 20 years as ‘The Paper Lady” as she was affectionally called by many, delivering the newspapers for The Virginian Pilot. Norma was also a very active member of The Board Creek Civic League championing the causes for the betterment of her neighborhood and surrounding areas.

Norma married the love of her life, Mr. Wilbert Whitaker (deceased). Norma had six children, Betty Davis (Milton, both deceased), Eleanor White (Charles), Furma Williams, Chrystal Whitaker (deceased}, Kathy Tillman (Albert), and Calvin Whitaker. She was blessed to love five living generations of her family with 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and four great, great-grandchildren. In addition, Norma is survived by her nieces, extended family & friends.

Norma was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church where she proudly served as an Usher and a Greeter. She volunteered in the bookstore and with the kitchen committee. Additionally, she was a member of the Women’s Ministry where she received the title “Queen D.I.V.A”. (Divinely Inspired Victorious and Anointed). She was a member of the Spiritual Support for Cancer Ministry, the Wisdom Ministry, and the Widow and Widowers Ministry and she was a past leader of the church’s Women’s Day Celebration. Norma was blessed to be selected as both The Woman of the Year in 2017 and Grandmother of the Year in 2022, for Second Calvary Baptist Church.

      Dear Family,
      I am deeply sorry for your loss. Mrs. Whitaker was such a sweet lady. I remember seeing her walking home after church and when offered a ride she would smile and kindly decline because she liked to walk. Although she may be dearly missed, her mind is at ease and her beautiful soul is at rest. Cherish your memories. May God bless and comfort each of you.
