Nancy ‘Nan’ Lewis Jones was the first of seven children born to the late Allen Washington and Virtley Ballard Jones. She attended Suffolk, VA, public schools and graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1958. As a youth, Nancy was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir under the direction of Essie Clark. She also sang in her high school choir, participating in State and All-State Festivals at local Virginia colleges.
Nancy eventually moved to Washington, DC. She had a career with the Internal Revenue Service, where she received several performance awards recognizing and appreciating her superior support and dedication. She retired after 30 years, moved back to her hometown of Suffolk, and rejoined her home church and choir.
Nan was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Allen Brent ‘Butch’ Jones and Brenda Jones Boone. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Joey Gilchrist of Suffolk, VA; her siblings Audrey C. Backus of Newport News, Ruth Ann Deloatch of Suffolk, Juanita D. Adams of Washington, DC, and Judith M. Shoulders of Hutto, TX; an aunt, Ann Wilson of Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
