He was educated in the Chesapeake school district and graduated from Oscar Smith High School. He completed his senior year in the home school program instructed by Mr. Long. Mr Long was faithfully committed to educating Montrell and proudly presented him with his High School Diploma June of 2013. Growing up “Pookie” loved sports and playing video games. He started playing football at the age of 8 with a local “peewee” league. Football became a passion and “Pookie” grew into the sport developing as a linebacker while playing in local leagues. He was an avid WWE wrestling fan as well. His favorite wrestler was the “The Rock” and he expressed his excitement both by watching the sport and playing WWE video games. He was a fun loving child who enjoyed life and brought joy to his family and friends.

On March 14, 2010, Montrell became bed ridden at age 14 as a result of an allergic reaction to prescribed medication. He received care at Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughter where the staff and doctors worked to create an environment that empowered and supported him. His doctor, Dr. Jane Nosenchuck took special interest in Montrell and personally trained his mother, Addie Brunson, to effectively continue his care. CHKD made it possible for “Pookie” to have a prom experience. At that event, he was celebrated and crowned Prom King and he shared his court with the Prom Queen.
