Mona Gwen Poteat Rieck

Sunrise: April 30, 1954

Sunset: June 22, 2025

Mona Poteat Rieck, 71, of Norfolk, VA, passed away on Sunday, June 22, surrounded by her family after a prolonged illness. She was born Mona Gwen Poteat in Concord, NC, on April 30, 1954, to Eva Olah Poteat and Warren Eugene Poteat II. Her father was in the US Army, and Mona (along with her seven sisters) spent their youth moving amongst numerous Army bases in the Carolinas, Kentucky, Georgia, France, Louisiana, Alabama, and Germany. The valedictorian of Baumholder High School in Germany in 1972, Mona went on to attend the University of South Carolina, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1975.

Mona met Dale Rieck Jr at USC, and they were married in December 1976. Continuing in the military life, with Dale being a Naval officer, their travels took them around the globe, living in Antigua, Cuba, California, Guam, South Carolina, Washington, DC, Japan, Georgia, and Norfolk, VA.

She is predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Poteat II, and her sister, Bopeep Swicegood. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Dale Rieck, Jr., of Norfolk, VA; her children, Dale Rieck, III, and his wife, Ngoua of Bluffton, SC; Jenny Kran, and her husband Alex of Alexandria, VA; Kimberly Jones of Alexandria, VA; and her six grandchildren, Tereseva, Ariel, Aurora, Cailen Rieck of Bluffton, SC, and Isaac and Zachary Kranz of Alexandria, VA; and her sisters Duna Miller, Gherry Gottwals, Dawn Allen, Gilda Bocock, Tammy Poteat, and Gidget Poteat; and her many nephews and nieces.

Mona was an avid sports fan, particularly the SC Gamecocks and any team her Grandchildren played on. The family photographer, Mona, was always capturing memories of family, friends, and travels. Despite all of the moves throughout her life, Mona prided herself on keeping in touch with her vast network of family and friends, and will be missed by so many.

The family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing.

Mona, one of my oldest and dearest friends since 9th grade. Loved having our talks thru the years, remembering things, laughing about them and discovering new tidbits too. I was truly privileged to be included in her friends group. I will truly miss her so very much. I know her families hearts are broken just like mine. Will see you on the other side or in our next life my friend and we can compare notes again while laughing.
