Miriam Demelza Hill

Miriam Demelza Hill, 68, affectionately known as “Kim” was called to her heavenly home on Friday, January 17, 2025. She was a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late William Hill and Rose Flemings.

Miriam was a graduate of the I.C. Norcom High School class of 1973. The graduating class is known as “The Class That Never Was—Is.” She received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from Virginia State University in 1977. Miriam participated in many organizations at VSU. She joined and was a proud member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She later joined the Delta Beta Sigma (Norfolk Alumnae) Chapter. She was also a member of the Moddis Phi Moddis, VSU Gospel Choir, Pan Hellenic Council, Social Organization Council, and Alpha Kappa Delta.

Miriam served many years as a probation officer; later, earning the title of and retiring as Deputy Chief of Probation and Parole for the city of Virginia Beach. Miriam was highly respected in her field and was proud to work alongside police officers whom she affectionately referred to as “her boys in blue.” Miriam developed and maintained many professional relationships and lasting friendships.

She was a fierce advocate and lover of dogs. She loved her furry friends and they loved her in return.

Miriam leaves to cherish her wonderful memories, Goddaughter/Caregiver, Lugonda Vann, Childhood Friend/Caregiver, Glyndell Griggs, Grand Goddaugther/Caregiver, Alivia Vann, Stepmother, Louise Mitchell, a dear and close friend Percell Anderson, Sisters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and a host of other relatives and friends. She had an unforgettable smile that would brighten your day and illuminate a room. May her smile and her sweet spirit be remembered forever.

    Miriam and I were classmates at Brighton Elementary School. Sorry to hear of her passing. She had a beautiful voice and was always loving an caring to all.
