Sunset: January 16, 2024

Larry Howard Dent, 74, of Petersburg, Virginia, passed away after a lengthy illness on January 16, 2024.  He was born in Norfolk, Virginia–the first of four children–to the late Deacon Kever Howard Dent and Geraldine Eleanor (Brown) Dent. Larry was a savvy businessman and a dedicated family man. Larry enjoyed life. Fishing, crabbing, photography, the arts and most of all communicating with people were some of his favorite pastimes. As his daughter would say, “he was a wordsmith.” He loved studying the word of God and ministering to others, especially soldiers from the local Army base formally known as Fort Lee. His love of ministry opened doors for him to preach in London, England, Oslo,Norway and Saarbrucken, Germany. He was a former member of Highway Church (COOLJC) in Stony Creek, Virginia.

Larry was a well-respected leader as a member of the Antioch Baptist Church Boy Scouts Troop 102.  He achieved the rank of Life Scout, selected by his peers to be the Senior Patrol Leader and initiated as a member of the Order of the Arrow Blue Heron Lodge.  While a student at Norfolk State University majoring in Fine Arts and a member of the R.O.T.C., Larry was initiated into the Phi Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, that was chartered in January 1970, on the campus of Norfolk State University. He, along with his brother Gary, were principals in establishing the chapter. Larry was the Second Chapter President and known for being an outstanding leader and key to its success on the campus and in the region. Larry was selected to work at WAVY Channel 10 in Norfolk, Virginia as a cameraman. The first African American to hold this position.  He along with Professor Grady James produced a weekly campus television program that aired on WAVY and showcased Norfolk State students including his cousin Arnett Gray and other musicians, art students and other talented Spartans.  After graduating from Norfolk State, Larry and his brother reported to Ft. Gordon, Georgia as Second Lieutenants Signal Officers. After completing his service, Larry stepped into his passion as an entrepreneur. Most noteworthy was his desire to employ those who needed a hand up in life. In 1985, he established his company Chariot Transmarketing Systems, Ltd. As a visionary, Larry inspired all of us to give our best effort and know that our $187.50 was truly earned and not given.

Larry Howard Dent is survived by his devoted spouse of 51 years Thurdell E.F. Dent. From this union, they had three children Laquenta Luster (Michael) of Reno NV, Sabrina Dent of Arlington VA, Stephen Dent (Jaymie) of Petersburg VA. He also has 7 grandchildren, Mikel Luster, Joshua Dent, Jordan Dent, Mishael Ganyon, Andre Trejo, Xavier Dent, Emory Shannon, and one great-grandchild Sora Dent. Larry is survived by Brother Gary Kever Dent (Carman), Sister Eleanor Lawrence Boyd (Don), Sister Sharon Jiggetts (Anthony), and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Aunt Geraldine Hall  held a unique and cherished place in Larry’s heart. Her love, wisdom, and unwavering support were sources of comfort and joy throughout Larry’s life. The special bond they shared was a testament to the profound impact Aunt Geraldine had on his journey, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and affection that will be remembered always.
