Mildred Marie Tompkins (Mil), was born to Lena Moore and William Mckinley Clark in South Norfolk, (now known as Chesapeake) Virginia, in the day and the year of the Lord May 3, 1939. Mildred was called to rest on Friday morning, November 6, 2021. Mildred was the youngest of four sisters – the late Sallie Mae and surviving Sisters Bernice Clark (Baby Sister) and Ella Moses (Mopsy). Mildred attended Waterford Elementary school and continued her last years of high school at Carver High. Mil grew up attending First Baptist Church in Berkely.
Mildred used her physical talents and graces as a Majorette at Carver performing at games and parades – Oh Yeah! Mildred enjoyed her life growing up in Chesapeake. Mildred was married to Samuel Ponton and they had 3 children – the late Samuel Alvester Ponton, the late Barry Lynn and Glenda Renee. Mil was preceded in death by her sister: Sallie Mae Ghoston, brothers: William R. Clark, James S. Clark, Mack C. Clark, Claude R. Clark, Freddie Clark and Leroy Clark Mildred is survived by her daughter Glenda Renee Tompkins and Grandchildren: Milton Gerard Tompkins, Latarsha Hardy, Nishelle Scott, Scotty Lynn Scott, Samuel Smith Christopher Vogel. Mildred is also survived by a wonderful host of precious great great grandchildren.
Later, Mildred married the late Gary Tompkins (a Military Gentleman) whom her children, family and friends grew to love and respect as Slim. Mildred is also survived by a wide array of cousins, nieces and nephews. Even though Mildred was an excellent mother and homemaker, she also maintained positions as an elevator operator at Altshuls Department Store and later at Weyerhauser where she worked as an Warehouse Worker and from where she retired. Mil was an excellent seamstress and was known to sew any outfit you wanted by way of just observing the outfit from a picture. If you lived with Mil – you would wake up every Saturday morning to the sound of her voice singing and the scent of cleaning products where she diligently cleaned her house.
To this very day it remains obvious that Mil loved to decorate her beautiful home – It was truly “A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place. Mil had a consistent saying when she was serious in what she said to you – “you can hurry up and believe that” Even up until her last days Mil was known to have many confidential consultations with others who looked up to her for her “talks”. Mil loved music all her life mostly old school, gospel and jazz. Mil also loved to watch western programs and made sure everyone knew NOT to change that channel to anything else and you can hurry up and believe that. Some would
say she could be feisty (riddled with love) Mil had a very special relationship with her Grandson Milton whom she nicknamed “Spud” from birth. Mil had a significant array of special friends over the years who displayed the ultimate meaning of real
friendship like the late Ann (her cousin) Gladys, Sweets, and Mr. George.
Mil spent her last days under the auspices of Ruth’s Care doing what she did best – always making life, her surroundings and others lives BETTER and Yes! “You can Hurry up and Believe That”
Mil’s Loving Memory will be Cherished and Honored Always
Lovingly Submitted

November 19, 2021 at 1:28 amAunt Mil, we cherish our memories of you. As Dad’s baby sister, you always made each of us feel special. I remember on our visits when I greeted you with a hug around your waist (and lingered) while you talked with Mom & Dad & the grown folks on the front porch. We love you always.
