Celebrating Her Life and Legacy

Mildred “Dolly” Brown Clark

On Friday, March 8, 2019 at 8:15 p.m. God dispatched an Angel to 2107 Charleston Avenue to pick a beautiful rose from His garden of Love in the person of Mildred “Dolly” Brown Clark.  Mildred was born March 20, 1951 to the proud parents of Nehemiah Brown, Jr. and Mildred W. Brown of Norfolk, Virginia.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred W. Brown, brothers Constatine Brown and Melvin Hardy.

Mildred was educated in the Norfolk Public School System.  She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk, Virginia.  At Booker T. Mildred received many awards and trophies for her work in art and sculpture designs. She was the first-place winner of the city-wide health fair for three consecutive years.  She was a member of the Tennis and Volleyball teams and a “strike-out-bowler”.  Upon graduation Mildred became a Norfolk Police Officer.  Transitioning from the police force, Mildred became a security officer at Booker T. Washington High School.  After leaving Booker T., Mildred became a security officer at Northside Middle School.  Mildred was very active at Northside.  She saw the problems that were between different students and organized a student club called “The Student Court”, which was instituted in all middle schools.   She produced a commercial video called “Stop the Violence”.  It was submitted and she was chosen to go to California.

Mildred was a Third-Degree Black Belt in “Karate” under the tutelage of Master Chief Hankins.  Mildred later married her tennis court partner, Joseph Clark Jr.  To this union God blessed them with a beautiful daughter; Darlene Michelle Clark.  Mildred was also blessed with a “bonus” son; Jaquan Coltrane, her nephew that she raised.

Mildred was a member in good standing at Little Zion Baptist Church, at 4430 Airline Boulevard.  She was a faithful member serving on the Pastor Aide, Hospitality, Senior Choir and Youth Sunday School Teacher.  She was also the videographer for the church.  Mildred was always willing to do whatever she could for the work of God’s Kingdom here on earth.  She loved the Lord and would make it know through her praise and singing.

Mildred is survived by her loving daughter, Darlene Michelle Clark, bonus son Jaquan Coltrane, Father; Nehemiah Brown Jr., six brothers; Nehemiah Brown III, Samuel Leroy Hardy, Clyde Ronnie Brown (Celestine), Montgomery Brown, Nathaniel Brown (Paulette) of Norfolk, Virginia and Cecil Brown (Tanya) of Winston Salem, North Carolina.  Three sisters; Regenia Justice of Norfolk, Virginia, Pricillia Feaster of Portsmouth, Virginia and Wilhelmenia Peck (Robert) of Chesapeake, Virginia.  Ten nieces, fifteen nephews, twenty-nine great nieces and nephews, aunt Vernell Eure, one uncle, Thurston Brown Sr.  Two God-sisters, Ora Isom and Yvonne Perkins.  A special friend; Deborah Skinner, a diligent care giver; Herb Sumler and a host of relatives and friends.

Mildred will be missed by her family and all who knew her.  Her infectious smile, kind and loving spirit were characteristics that brought joy to all.
