Michael Hunt

Sunrise: April 7, 1947

Sunset: April 9, 2025

Michael Hunt was born to Mr. Theodore and Mrs. Gladys V. Washington Hunt on April 7, 1947, in the Gilmerton section of Norfolk County (currently Chesapeake), Virginia. He later moved to the Berkley section of Norfolk and attended Booker T. Washington High School. Michael began his employment with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in April 1970. He retired in February of 2021.

Anyone who knew Michael knew that he loved to work. Norfolk Nava Shipyard and the people there were very important to him. At work he was called the “Cookie Pimp” because he sold cookies and snacks to his co-workers for them to enjoy on breaks. You could always count on a big smile from Mike, and if you were hungry, a meal. He was passionate about cooking and was well known for his chopped barbeque as well as that super sweet tea with lemon. If you never had his spaghetti, well, you missed a treat. Mike was a music lover, and he loved to tell stories about “spinning records” as a DJ during his youth. During the holidays, you could find Michael in the kitchen singing while making sweet potato pies and gingerbread. When he wasn’t working or cooking, you could be found watching one of many television ministries and praying. Michael loved to laugh and joke. Being around Mike, you got a good laugh and possibly learned some history, too, about family history or local history. Michael loved to enlighten people with talk of the good old days.

Michael departed this life on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at home in Portsmouth, VA, with his family.

My condolences to Mr. Hunt’s family and friends. I was a coworker of his and I can say he was definitely a joy to work with. I remember him always singing while he was working. He gave me words of wisdom when I first started. You will truly be missed Mr. Hunt. R.I.P
