Melvine Yvonne Wyatt Norman was a native of Norfolk, Virginia, born February 14, 1940, to the late George W. Wyatt, Jr., and Mattie Hall Wyatt Taylor. She was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia, with a degree in Social Work.
Melvine lived a life of service to her family, her church, and the community. In her professional life, she was employed by the City of Norfolk, Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority where she worked for several years and retired as an Eligibility Worker from the Norfolk Department of Social Services after approximately 27 years of service.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at St. John’s African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, Norfolk, Virginia, where she served in many capacities. Melvine, affectionately known as “Aunt Melvine” served as a Second Vice President of Nannie C. Phelps Women’s Missionary Society, Director of the Young People’s Department (YPDers), First Vice President and President of the Lay Organization, Stewardess Board No. 1, Usher Board No. 2, Director of the Youth Usher Board, Douglas-Studivant Sunday School Class, Brock-Hunter Fellowship Group, Shut-in Club, Mamie Kornegay Fellowship Group, Board of Christian Education, Flossie McIntyre Scholarship Committee, Altar Guild, Helping Hands, Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (N.E.S.T.) Program, which served the homeless community, and the soup kitchen.
She served as a First Vice President of the Virginia Conference Lay Organization, Recording Secretary for the Virginia Conference Branch, Women’s Missionary Society, and Recording Secretary of the Second Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society, and was a member of the Mary W. Sanders Area Women’s Missionary Society. Melvine became a Life Member of the Women’s Missionary Society on December 18, 2019.
An advocate and leader in the community, Melvine was a member of Adeline Ward Chapter #197, OES, PHA Norfolk, Virginia, where she served as a Past Matron, and she was the secretary for approximately 35 years. Melvine was also a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Color People (NAACP).
On May 21, 2023, mom quietly, and peacefully entered eternal rest. She is survived by her former husband, General D. Norman, and from this union came a devoted son, Antonio Kipland “Kippy” Norman (deceased), and two loving daughters, Rev. Renee Denise Norman Jones (Randall), Chantilly, Virginia, and Marvette Michelle Norman Campbell (William “Billy” Walker, Fiancé), Virginia Beach, who served as her faithful and loving caretakers, brother, George E. Wyatt (Dorothy), and sister, Elder Yvette S. Wyatt of Chesapeake, Virginia. She also leaves to cherish her memory nine grandchildren, Antonio “Kippy” Evans, Savoy Odom (Tamara), Sonya Odom, Nadine P. Odom Turner (Andre’), Tony Wyatt Bazemore (Holly), Antonio Odom, Aaron C. Campbell, Alan J. Campbell, and Randall W. Jones, II, fourteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and special friends.
Melvine was preceded in death by her father, George W. Wyatt, Jr., mother, Mattie Hall Wyatt Taylor, Willie Taylor (lovingly known as “Daddy Willie”), Constance W. Wyatt (lovingly known as “Mama Constance”), brother, Ronald O. Wyatt, sister, Nadine P. Wyatt, son, Antonio Kipland “Kippy” Norman, granddaughter, Randee Faith Jones, son-in-law, M. Kirt Campbell, and cousin, Egypt “Jimmy” Freeman.
