It is with deep sadness and profound love that we announce the passing of Melvin Weldon Hite, Sr., who departed this world peacefully on October 15, 2024, at the age of 98, in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Early Life and Family

Melvin was born on February 14, 1926, in Blackstone, Virginia, to his beloved parents, Sammie and Sallie Hite. He grew up alongside his siblings in a close-knit family. Melvin was the devoted husband of Edna Hite and the cherished father of three sons: the late Melvin Weldon Hite, Jr., Barry Ambrose Hite, and Mark Allen Hite, Sr. He was also a loving stepfather to Erliene Mccoy and Selease Saunders. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren—Mark Allen Hite, Jr., Melvin Cross-Mills, Christopher Allen Hite, Sr., Camden Alexander Hite, Sr., Maxwell Hunter Saunders, William Mccoy, Jr., Richard Mccoy, Launetta Cogniet, Cameron Allen Hite, and Jada Morgan Hite—and great-grandchildren, Christopher Allen Hite, Jr., Naomi Hite, and Camden Alexander Hite, Jr.

Career and Service

A man of unwavering dedication and resilience, Melvin joined the Navy at just 14 years old, serving from 1940 to 1947, including during World War Il. He later served as a Merchant Seaman, dedicating over 60 years to his maritime career and achieving the esteemed rank of Chief. Despite only a fifth-grade education, his journey is a testament to his extraordinary perseverance and hard work.

Hobbies and Interests

Melvin’s passions extended beyond his career. A culinary enthusiast, he delighted in filling his home with the enticing aromas of his cooking and sharing meals with loved ones. He cherished spending time with children, sharing laughter, treats, and wisdom. A true car enthusiast, Melvin appreciated the beauty and mechanics of automobiles. His social nature drew people to him, making him a beloved friend, particularly among his fellow members of the Prentice Hall Masonic Chapter and The American Legion. His presence brought joy and community to many.

Legacy

Melvin’s life was a story of joy, kindness, and generosity. His warmth and wisdom touched all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire and uplift his family, friends, and community.
