Melvin “Bones” Smith, Sr.

Melvin “Bones” Smith, Sr.  73 departed this earthy life on Monday, January 22, 2024. He was born in Norfolk, VA to Annie Sugars Smith and the late Frank Smith, Jr. He was the fourth out of six children.

Melvin received his education in Norfolk County, Virginia, (now Norfolk City) public schools, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. He later became a Merchant Seaman with the Military Sealift Command (MSC), and then worked for the International Longshoreman Association (ILA) Local 1248. This career path lasted 25 years until his retirement.

Melvin was determined, strong-willed and most importantly, believed in the Lord and loved church. He read and his bible faithfully and could recite any bible verse. Melvin also enjoyed swimming, crabbing, fishing, and bike riding. Melvin was also a giver, he always tried to help people out when they were in a bind. He mostly enjoyed playing the lottery everyday. Most of all, he loved spending time with his son, Melvin, Jr.; going to the movies and playing video games. He also enjoyed spending time with his best friends, James Newton and Herman Cornelius and keeping in touch with his best-friend cousin, Herbert Burke. Melvin was blessed to be married for 44 years, to the love of his life and best friend, Angela Hill Smith. They spent many wonderful years together until his timely passing.

Melvin is predeceased by his sister, Evelyn; and brothers, James, Anthony and Rodger.

Left to cherish his memories his wife, Angela; son, Melvin, Jr; daughter, Tara; grandchildren, Brittani, Kierra and Ashlee; five great grandchildren; his mother, Annie and sister, Janice Smith. He shared a special bond with his niece, Sophia and nephews, Negus and Allen.
