Mattie Church Strong

Mattie Church Strong was born on June 17, 1941 in Cape Charles, VA to the late Mattie and Winston Church, Sr. Mattie attended Northampton County High School and later received her Associates of Secretarial Science Degree at Norfolk State University.

On July 15, 1962, she was united in Holy matrimony to Harry L. Strong. She faithfully served Norfolk State University and its students as a financial aid administrator for over 35 years until she retired. During her retirement, she enjoyed caring for her family and friends, watching her beloved Steelers, and beholding the green and gold.

She was predeceased by her mother and father, Mattie and Winston Church, Sr; three sisters, Annie Green, Willie Pettijohn, and Lena Barron and one brother, Winston Church, Jr. She leaves to mourn, a devoted husband of 57 years, Harry L. Strong; one sister, Tykisha Brown (Clinton Brown) of Wilmington, DE; two daughters, DeAngela Strong of Norfolk, VA and Sophia Strong of Norfolk, VA; one son, Laval Church of Wilmington, DE; two grandchildren, Laval Church of Wilmington, DE and Marissa Booth of Norfolk, VA; four great grandchildren, Malana Church, Carter Church, Quadir Clark of Wilmington, DE and Kaiden Whitehead of Norfolk, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bobby told me that she’s been sick and Ive been keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. I miss you all from the neighborhood. I’m now living in Phoenix, Az. Not only was she one of my colleagues at Norfolk State University, she & Harry was our friends. Each time we visit them we always had fun & laughter. We are truly going miss Mattie, but never forgotten.

    I am sending my heart-felt condolences. Mattie was such a sweet person. I met her at NSU when I was doing work study for Mrs Ethel Joyner. She worked across the hall from me…but was always there to help me.
