Mary John Williams Porter transitioned into internal rest early Wednesday morning, April 11, 2018 at Maryveiw Nursing Care
Center. Mary was born on June 15, 1927 to Herman Williams, Sr. and Della Crocker Williams in Courtland (South Hampton County), VA. Mary was the second born into a family of seven children and her father passed away when she was ten years old. Mary had to become a great help to her mom taking care of her siblings and working on the family farm.
She married her husband, Stanley C. Porter and after they had their sons, they first moved to Suffolk, VA to work and raise their family and then settled in Portsmouth, VA. Mary was an excellent cook and housekeeper and she loved cooking and having food in the house for family and friends. When her husband started his own business, Mary worked the daily needs of maintaining the business. After Stanley passed away in 2000 Mary was able to keep herself in her own home until 2015. Her sons Rubin and Clayton cared for her the last two years of her life.
Mary was a member of New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Herman Sr. and Della Williams; her husband, Stanley C. Porter; her sister, Emma Boykins; her brothers, Herman Williams, Jr. and Wilbert Williams, Sr; her grandson, Quinton Powell and her son, Melvin C. Porter, Sr. Survivors are two precious sons, Rubin (Grace) and Clayton, Sr ( Phyllis); grandchildren, Gwendolyn Jones (Donald), Melvin Porter Jr. (Antoinette), Monica Porter, Clayton Porter, Jr (Hope), Rubin Porter (Nakia), Frankie Dunn Jr (Alicia) and John Lee; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Harris and Eunice Wilson; brother, Milton Williams Sr. (Goldie); sister in-law, Virginia Porter; aunt in-law, Fannie Porter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

But we also rejoice in the fact of knowing that she is resting in the arms of our savior Jesus Christ to hear him say “Well done, thy good and faithful servant” Mrs Porter was far more than a neighbor.. she was family to my entire family.She took the role of grandmother to Ashley and I. A wonderful friendly caring spirit..a beautiful heart. We loved her very much.. she will be truely missed. We extend our love and condolences and heartfelt prayers to the entire family.

I was so sorry to learn of the passing of our dear Mrs. Porter. From the few encounters that I had with her, I saw the strength and dignity of a woman who loved the Lord, and who had raised a fine family who were dedicated to the Lord’s service and to their families.
I sincerely commend Mrs. Porter’s family and others who were entrusted as caregivers and were dedicated to this dear mother through the end of her remarkable life.
May the Lord comfort your hearts and spirits as only He can, and may memorable moments bring you a measure of joy and peace during this time.
