Mary Louise Virginia Griffin

Sunrise: December 25, 1942

Sunset: January 3, 2021
Mary Louise Griffin, age 78, departed this life on Sunday morning January 3, 2021 at Sentara Leigh Hospital. She was born and raised by her parents: the late James Albert and Mary Alice Stancil, in the Berkley section of Norfolk.
For many years, she was employed by ODU where she worked in the cafeteria and subsequently retired. Years later, she retired from the Founder’s Inn where she worked in housekeeping. Mary was a saved, God-fearing woman who loved the Lord. She had a true connection right to God’s ear and you always knew she could get a prayer through. Her first favorite thing to do was visiting and spending time with her family whom she loved so much. Mary also loved to shop antiques, which was one of her favorite past times. She was a former member of New Rising Sun Baptist Church for 2 years where she sang in the choir. She was joyful, happy and always had a smile on her face. A glow about her would pick up anyone who felt sad or down. She was a very caring, loving person with a great sense of humor and was always willing to help anyone who needed her. However, her main love was sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was responsible for leading many family members to Christ.
She leaves to cherish her memory seven children: Felicia Griffin (Adrian and Nikki) of Prince Frederick, Maryland; Areatha Pegram (Jennifer, Jessica, and Jordy) of Norfolk, John Griffin (Michelle ) of Stafford, Virginia, Patricia Dukes (Ashley and Ernest) of Virginia Beach, Janice Wheatley (Jeff) of Norfolk, Kevin Griffin (Leecena) of Norfolk and Steve Griffin (Christine) of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Maria Spence of Massillon, Ohio and Blanche Stancil of Columbus, Ohio; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews along with nephew, Kenneth Spence (Patsy) (also called her special son),
She is preceded in death by an older sister, Imogene Delores Davis and her fraternal twin brother, James (Sonny) Stancil and her granddaughter, Chavier Griffin.

My Mom was such a wonderful woman of God who served Him with joy and who also instilled in her children at a young age to fervently serve God as well. She taught us to put God first in all we do, to learn His voice and to obey Him. In return, He would never leave nor forsake us. She also taught us how to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour and to love Jesus with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength. My Mom is now beholding God’s glory in heaven and I am so happy for her because she is nolonger in pain. Although we miss her dearly, we know someday, we too will be with her in heaven.

Seek God while He can still be found and accept and live for Christ.

      MY MOM MY QUEEN
My mom was the greatest person that I could ever know it wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for anyone she was my hero in so many ways she was a very strong and special woman who devoted her time to the lord and her family. Whenever we were feeling some kind of way she would be there to talk to you and pray with or for you if she didn’t have the answer. I can go on for hours about you mom but I’m sure there are others who can continue with kind words about you to say. I will leave you with this I don’t know why my God has taken you from me but he must have needed you more but I will always miss you and know that you will always be with me and my family as well as all of your children and family and friends. You were the greatest mother of all times again you will be missed but never forgotten until we meet again much love always my QUEEN gbu luvm

    Pat and family,
I admire your mom so much. She always looked out for me and my children. She always invited us to the holiday meals and most of all she shared love, food and herself, always had a smile, that beautiful wide grin on her face and greeted you. I felt nothing but love those years ago. I haven’t seen her in years but i will always remember when I did, it always was that same genuine greeting. RIP to such a caring and supportive woman. We know your body is not here any longer, but you spirit will live on forever. I love you! I love you! Its never easy to say goodbye, so I just say….see you again one day! RIH always…Toni, Rah, DaeDae and DJ

Mom I don’t know what to say is except I miss you dearly. The day you entered heaven and gained your wings I was broken hearted. Every time I close my eyes , I see your beautiful face and hear your loud infectious laughter. When you gained your wings I lost my best friend my confidant and my laughing buddy.I could talk and tell you anything and you would never divulge a word if I said don’t tell anyone. What am I going to do now? I could see in your eyes that you were tired but I didn’t want to except that you would be leaving your family. Did you know that Nikki and I were planning great vacation for you when you got better. God had other plans that only he has the answer too. I told you on our very last visit together January 2, 2021 when each family member had 5 minutes to talk to you that I didn’t want you to leave me and please stay. You looked so sad and then I realized that you knew that wasn’t God’s plan. I began to cry and just cry. I told you that it was okay to be with God and you smiled. We held hands tightly so tight that we could feel each other’s bones in our hands. I knew that would be the last time that I would get to hold your hand.I told you that I love you and that you were the best Mom anyone could have. You gave me that beautiful smile and said I love you back. We both knew that we would not see each other again.Goodbye my sweet Angel. Sleep well and peacefully in Paradise.I Love you❤️?

We all know death brings pain that time can only heal, I know because I lost several members of my family but I also lost a second mom who I truly adore. although she wasn’t my biological mom she was truly loved as a biological mom when I was going through my pain from losing one of my own siblings she was there to comfort me, she was always there anytime, day or night when and if I needed her. Mom you will truly be missed I know you are in heaven with God your joy is eternally here with us we will cherish the memories and lovable times we had with you. Your love will never leave our hearts because we know someday we will see you again. We leave you to rest now, sleep well. Love you always….

As I listen to this home going service, I am reminded of the family that I felt took me in when I lived in VA 14-years ago and Pat and I were close friends. All of you are a reflection of your mother and she will continue to live through you! My fondest, and funniest memories of her was how she would ask, while we were already eating, “what are we going to eat for…”, and Pat and I would look at each other and laugh. She always made me laugh and feel welcome!
Family, be Blessed and hold on to each other!
Ms. Griffin, Until we meet again in Heaven!

    Cheryl
