Mary L. Walker of the Titustown section of Norfolk went home to be with the Lord early Monday morning on February 8, 2021. Mary was born to the late Maggie Simpson and Robert L. Hamlin in Norfolk Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Benjamin L.Walker Sr; Benjamin Walker Jr. stepson ;Sisters, Thelma Friend, Adeline Hamlin, Sarah Braxton, Corneda Harmon and Alethia Moye.
She was educated in the Norfolk Public School System and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
Mary joined First Baptist Church, Logan Park (FBCLP) at an early age and was a faithful member for over 70 plus years. She enjoyed singing in the church choirs and was one of the key organizers of the FBCLP Junior Choir. She also served with the Perry Madison League as she loved preparing meals and serving others on numerous church functions. Everyone loved her homemade rolls and that “special” touch she added to her baked chicken recipe.
Her compassion was also reflected in her caring for many of her family members. For many years she hosted the annual Titustown Golf Tournament. Her home was always open to many family members and friends.
She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed working with younger children as evidenced by her involvement in several children/youth activities that included the Vacation Bible Schools, Youth Choir, and the Titustown Tots and Teens Child Care Center. Later in her life, she served as a help care provider for the Shapiro family.
Mary’s memory will forever be cherished by her children: Cynthia Brooks (Albert Sr.); Roland Thornton (Trina); and Keith Thornton (Carmen). Grandchildren: Albert Jr. and Kenneth Brooks; Stephanie Thornton; Great Grand kids, Asher Braxton and Bentley Brooks and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended to Holistic Home Health Care, Madie Hamlin, Carmen and Trina Thornton.
