Mary Lillian Cooper

Lillian Cooper (Lil) Was called home on May 29, 2019 at Chesapeake Regional Health Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. She was born in Windsor, North Carolina to the late Samuel and Clatie Cooper on April 5, 1943. Lillian was the fifth of six children, Minnie (Peggy) Cooper (deceased), George B. Cooper (deceased), Angelo Cooper (deceased), Janice Cooper and Geraldine Brooks.

She attended public school in Windsor, North Carolina and matriculated at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Lillian worked as an eligibility worker for many years with the City of Portsmouth in Virginia and later worked for the Atlantic City Free Public Library in New Jersey. Her employment in service reflected her caring and helpful spirit. Lillian leaves to cherish her memory five children, Dana Downey, Willie C. Downey, Benjamin R. Downey (Susan), David W. Downey (Shamelia) and Lori A. Downey (Spergen Scarborough); four grandchildren, Roderick A. Coleman, Landon Downey, Brent Downey and Ardyn Downey; one great grandson, Cameron D. Coleman and her children’s siblings, Sharolyn Brown and Johnathan Williams; her sisters, Geraldine Brooks and Janice Cooper and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lillian will always be remembered for her open heart, willing spirit and sharp tongue. We will miss her, but we are thankful
for the times we shared with her and will cherish those memories forever.
