Marlene A. Britt

Marlene Antionette Britt, 89 formerly of the 800 block of Fayette Street Portsmouth, passed away November 24, 2022. Marlene Britt is the daughter of Mr. Johnnie Perry, Sr. and Mrs. Mary B. Perry and a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. She was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School. After marrying the love of her life, Willie Howard Britt, they moved to Philadelphia, PA. While in Philadelphia, Marlene worked as a private nanny/daycare provider. She was a  faithful member of St. Paul Holy Church, Philadelphia, PA. After their retirement, Marlene and her husband returned to Portsmouth, Va in 1990 and began faithfully working at New Hope Church, Portsmouth, VA. Marlene served and assisted in numerous positions within the church which include, missionary, usher, Pioneer Club leader, Vacation Bible teacher/leader, Women’s Day officer, and secretary-support to the Pastor. New Hope Church will sincerely miss Sis. Marlene Britt and her beautiful heartwarming welcome addresses that she presented each Sunday morning to visitors. 

Marlene was compassionate, loving, and giving. She will be especially remembered for always calling and checking in on family and friends. We will truly miss those phone calls. She left us with her endearing words of encouragement “Stay Close to the Lord”.

Marlene has five brothers, Walter (Dorette) Perry of Fair Oaks, CA, Norman (Freda) Perry of Baltimore, MD, and Melvin (Delores) Perry, Martin (Karen) Perry and Charles (Desaline) Perry all from Portsmouth, VA. She has one aunt Doris Daughtry and a host of nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Marlene was the 2nd Mother-Auntie to Candice Beasley, she played a major role in her upbringing, sharing Godly wisdom and lots of love. Marlene was predeceased by two sisters, June Perry and Diane Booker Perry. Marlene is also predeceased by four brothers, Jasper Perry, Johnnie Perry, Willie Perry, and Phillip Perry.  

We humbly bow to the will of God. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

    I had the pleasure of knowing Marlene Britt for 30 plus years. I was a friend of her sister, Diane. She always made me feel like family. I am saddened by the loss. To Candice, the Perry brothers and family, you have my deepest condolences. May God provide strength and comfort as only HE can.
