It’s hard to sum up the life of a man whose presence was felt more in moments than in words. Mark didn’t need a lot of words to make his point; his life spoke for him. Mark Anthony Mitchell graced the world with his charming, intelligent spirit on July 7, 1964, in Kingston, Jamaica. Known affectionately by his siblings as “Marco,” Mark proved early on to be an adorable and courageous young man with a strong will and sharp mind. Quiet, steady, and deeply connected to those around him, Mark possessed an extraordinary gift; he could connect with anyone he met, not through long conversations, but through sincerity, quiet confidence, and an open heart. He could share a look, a nod, or a smile and make you feel truly seen.
Born with a competitive spirit and a gentle soul, he was a natural athlete. He played cricket and table tennis with ease, but it was on the soccer field where his passion truly came alive. That love for the game carried him all the way to Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York, where he earned a soccer scholarship and later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. That milestone was an early sign of the balance he would strike between discipline and drive as well as heart and hustle.
Mark was never afraid of change. In fact, he embraced it. An entrepreneur at heart, he constantly sought new skills, new opportunities, and new ways to evolve. To him, standing still was never an option. He understood that life moved forward, and so he did too, always with grace and intention.
Eventually, he found purpose in public service, becoming a Corrections Officer. What started as a job became a calling. Through dedication and integrity, he rose through the ranks to become a Lead of a Tactical Movement Team, a role that demanded strength, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility, all of which he carried effortlessly.
Beyond the uniform and professional accolades, he was a father and grandfather, deeply loved and revered by his children and grandchildren. His kitchen was another arena where he excelled, where love was seasoned into every dish. His curry chicken was legendary, but it was his shrimp—oh, his shrimp—that could never be matched. It was more than a meal. It was a memory, a tradition, a love language.
Gone in the physical, but never in the spirit, Mark is survived in legacy by his beloved children: Monique Mitchell, Tedisha Mitchell Johnson, Michael Mitchell (Shakia Rose-Mitchell), Tenisha Mitchell, Montae Mitchell, Devon Mitchell, Jermaine Mitchell, and Candace Mitchell. His memory lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Tai Freeman, Xavier Johnson, Joh Elle Johnson, Zarion Mitchell, Marla Reign, and Teo Mitchell, his dear brother Collin Charlton, a special niece Sianah “Deedee” Moore, and a host of other loving family members and close friends.
Mark is reunited in peace with his beautiful daughter Monae Mitchell, his loving mother Eurline Duggan, and his father Wesley George Mitchell, who all preceded him in death.
His final wish was simple, yet profound, Mark wanted to return to Jamaica with his children and grandchildren, the place that shaped him, surrounded by the people he loved most. While life had other plans, and he won’t be there physically, as his children honor his request, his spirit will travel with them. He’ll be present in every wave, every breeze, and every laugh shared between his lineage. Mark’s spirit will be home. As we say goodbye for now, we carry him with us in our stories, our recipes, and most importantly our resilience. And in the words only he could make feel so full of life, we say: “Bless up.”

April 23, 2025 at 12:45 pmI have visited this site countless times, trying to find the words to put together… still… I have none that can describe how deeply devasted I am about Mitchell’s passing. There was never a run we went on that we didn’t laugh until our stomach hurt. I always teased that the Crown Vic was his favorite transportation vehicle because he couldn’t help but to press the break and gas at the same time. I found comfort in venting to him because I knew he would always be blunt and honest. I’m going to miss the laughs we shared the most because once we started, we couldn’t stop. I’m going to miss teaching class with him, giving him new restaurant ideas, and I’m definitely going to miss taking turns buying lunch at Cutlass. Had I known the last time we talked would be the last time I would ever hear his voice I would’ve told him I loved him because that’s something I know I showed him, but I wish he could have heard it. The armory will never be the same but I’m thankful I was able to meet and be friends with a solid human being. A real standup guy! Mitchell you will truly be missed!
