The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalms 23:1–6.
Mario Mullen was born on August 9, 1973, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was the son of the late Charles Mullen Jr. and Paulletha Mullen.
Mario joined Ebenezer Baptist Church at an early age. He was a graduate of Bayside High School, where he helped lead the Marlins to win back-to back state titles in 1990–1991. He earned the title of AAA Player of the Year in 1991. Following high school, Mario attended Old Dominion University, where he had a successful four-year career. Mario earned All-Colonial Athletic Association freshman honors. Following college, Mario furthered his education by obtaining his Master’s of Science Degree in Education from Cambridge College. He taught special education at Maury High School, Ocean Lakes High School, and Tallwood High School. Mario coached JV basketball at Maury High School and Varsity basketball at Ocean Lakes High School. Additionally, Mario had the honor and privilege of being able to coach both of his sons who attended and played for Ocean Lakes High School (Tyler, Class of 2021, and Chase, Class of 2025). Watching his sons fulfill their potential on and off the court was one of Mario’s greatest joys.
Mario was preceded in death by his father, Charles Mullen, Jr.
Mario leaves behind his loving wife of over twenty years, Angela S. Mullen; sons, Charles Tyler Mullen and Chase C. Mullen; daughter, Maddison V. Rucker; mother, Paulletha Mullen; and brother, Jermar A. Mullen; in addition to a multitude of extended family, beloved friends, students, and co-workers.
Mario was a man of great character, known for his unselfish nature, forgiving heart, and a contagious sense of humor. He will truly be missed.
