Marie C. Nichols

Sunrise: April 8, 1930

Sunset: June 2, 2021

God in his infinite wisdom called Marie Celestine Nichols to ascend into heaven at 91 years old on June 2, 2021. She was our matriarch and a physical representation of home and comfort.

Marie was born April 8, 1930 in Chesapeake, Va to the late Mattie and Dixie Jones. She is reunited with her brothers, James and Joe and sister Mary. She leaves behind a legacy in her children Nathaniel Jones (Marjorie), Phyllis Simmons (Fred), and Cynthia Cooper (George); grandchildren Ryan Jones, Glenn Jones, Shawnetta Jones, Derrick Simmons, George Cooper Jr., Keith Cooper, Quinton Gatling, Renita Cooper, Tiffani Cooper, and Bridget Cooper, as well as 25 great-grandchildren.

If you knew Marie you’d describe her as upfront, intelligent, feisty, funny, and quick-witted. One could never predict her sayings or responses. Yet she was routine and generous. She’d gladly share half of her only bite. She was strong and stubborn, never to vocalize pain, fear, or insecurities. She took every challenge head on and always persevered steadfastly and unshaken. She was content, loving, and goofy. What a memorable laugh she had! She was known for loving her word search puzzles, Honey Nut Cheerios, General Hospital, and in her younger days Wrestling and Walker Texas Ranger. She was one of a kind.

Marie was surrounded by the family she created, which multiplied, keeping her youthful and engaged all these years. There was always something going on; new babies, celebrations, events, holidays, and frequent visits.

Marie was always there, never to judge. Simply present, observing those she loved grow and experience life’s accomplishments and tribulations. She loved and accepted us all without question, it was one of her best traits. We never had to hold back our personalities or thoughts around her. She knew us.

Marie will always be loved and forever missed. Rest in Heaven, Mother and Grandma; what a life you’ve lived and an impact you’ve made!
