Margaret B. Saunders

On Wednesday morning, February 9, 2022, our beloved Margaret Frances Buck Saunders entered into the blessedness of eternal rest surrounded by her family.  

She was born on November 2, 1933 in Norfolk, Virginia to her parents, Dr. Abram H. Buck, Sr. and Margaret Luke Buck.  She was married to her high school sweetheart, Mr. Melvin Wilson Saunders on August 11, 1957 for 33 years before he died in September of 1990.  Not only is she preceded in death by her parents and husband, but also by her brother, Abram H. Buck, Jr., and sister, Loretta B. DuVerney.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia and Hampton (Institute) University.  She earned a B.S. in Chemistry and a M.A. in Science Education.  She furthered her studies by obtaining the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and Ed.D. in educational and administrative services from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Margaret retired in 1996 as the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support Services for  Norfolk Public Schools.  She had been with the Norfolk Public School System for forty of her forty-three years in education.  She had been employed as a chemistry and biology teacher, science department chair, Reading Content Specialist in science, Assistant Principal for Instruction, Director of Instruction, Assistant Superintendent for Region II Schools, Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. Additionally, she served as a team leader in workshops for teachers, college supervisor for science student teachers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, former adjunct lecturer in Continuing Education at Old Dominion University, and past Chair of the Research Committee of the Tidewater Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.  She was an active member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

As a faithful member of The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, she had served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.  She was also a member of the Norfolk Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc., The Chesapeake Women’s Club, Chesapeake/Virginia Beach Chapter of Links, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a former member of the Norfolk Chapter of Delicados, Inc. 

Margaret Buck Saunders leaves to cherish her memories, her loving daughter, Marquel Saunders Price, a son-in-law, Howard Price, III, 2 grandchildren, Howard Melvin Price, IV and Milan Alexandria Price, twelve nieces and nephews, a special friend of 21 years, Gillis Watson and two loving caregivers, Dominique Corbett and Amber Short.

    I am very sad to hear of the passing of Margaret. I worked with her at Norfolk Schools ad she was a sister Link. Margaret was a wonderful person and she had a great soul. Although you will miss her, Margaret will always be in your heart and mind guiding your every move. She loved every ounce of you.

    Sending my deepest Condolences to the family. I worked with Dr Saunders at the Norfolk School Board. Such a beautiful lady. I learned so much from her. I will never forget her. May she rest peacefully. Much Love to the family!
