On March 9, 2022, Marcella Coles departed to leave for her heavenly home. She was born on April 4, 1940, in a little area of Chesapeake, Virginia called South Hill. As a child, she attended First Baptist South Hill in her early years where she was baptized. Marcella attended South Hill Elementary and on to Carver High School until her senior year. As an adult, she became a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Chesapeake. She enjoyed attending with her family. She was the daughter of deceased parents, Willie Charles Harrell, Jr. and Virginia Louise Skyles Harrell.
Marcella leaves to cherish her beautiful fond memories to her children, Keith L. Crawford (Erja), Leroy Wendell Coles Jr., (Louise), Debbie Lynn Coles Godfrey, her sister Veronica M. Tutwiler (Theodore), 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces & nephews, and beloved friends. She was an exceptional person, full of love. We were all blessed to have her in our lives. She was sweet, humble, kind, loving, caring and thoughtful.
Preceded in death was her ex-husband Leroy W. Coles Sr., and brothers, Marvin Harrell, Dallas Harrell, Earl Harrell, Dwight Harrell, Stephen ( Shep) Harrell and Willie C. Harrell III. She was the eldest of all her eight other siblings and had great responsibility.
In 1958, Marcella moved to Norfolk and worked diligently to raise her 3 children. She returned to school to complete her education. She received her high school diploma where she excelled and went on to attend Commonwealth College in Norfolk. She furthered her education and training with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to become a highly skilled and sought-after phlebotomist. Marcella was always called upon by doctors to assist with difficult patients because of her proficient smile and witty sense of humor. Everyone loved her. Marcella retired from SNGH in 1996, after 15 years of dedicated service. She went on to work as a sales associate at JC Penny until her health began to fail.
Farewell, Marcella, our beloved one, for you are leaving us! As you wave goodbye, no more tears, pain or sorrow…live on! You were a survivor, fighting the ugly, mind-robbing disease called Alzheimer’s. You are free now of that battle to go on to your eternal resting place. Goodbye to sorrow, welcome your joy!
