Magdelene Jones

Magdelene Drewery Jones, 90, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2020 in Pikesville, Maryland after a long battle with cancer. She was a native of Portsmouth, VA. She was born March 1930 to the late Viola (Bailey) and Frank Drewery, Sr.

She attended Tidewater Community College and Norfolk State University.

Maggie was employed many years at Virginia Mutual Life Insurance Company; the Virginia Employment Commission and later at Goodwill Industries Transportation Dept. in Norfolk, VA. Maggie worked for a clothing manufacturer in Philadelphia with her sister Evelyn. The manager notices that Maggie was “the perfect size 14” and she would often model clothing for the executives. Maggie often traveled to her father’s hometown of Newark NJ and she even lived there for a while. While living in Newark Maggie spent time with her aunts many of whom were evangelists, this experience not only expanded her knowledge of the Lord but grew her faith.  Maggie was an avid quilter and seamstress. She took quilting classes at the Waxter Center in Baltimore MD. She later became a member of the Quilters Guild. Maggie also enjoyed flowers and gardening she was a member of the Churchland Garden club; Maggie’s willingness to serve Christ in any way needed, and her love for the church will be deeply missed, as she was a member of Love and Charity Lodge and an active member of Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA for many years. She was loved by many residents of the Churchland community and would often have long conversations on her porch with her neighbors and friends.

Maggie was preceded by her husband Robert Leonard Jones, two brothers James Drewery and Frank Drewery Jr., two sisters Ethel Smith and Evelyn Green.

She leaves to cherish her memory a son Anthony Michael Bing of Portsmouth and daughter in law Nina Harris Bing of Portsmouth, VA, two daughters Robin Lenora Stallworth of Portsmouth, VA and son in law William Keith Stallworth Sr. of Samson, Alabama; and Roslyn Thomas and son-in-law R. Rodney Thomas of Annapolis, MD.

She leaves loving memories to her Grandchildren Aaron E. Bing, Duane Gallon, Darryl (Ane) C. Hall, Jr., William K. Stallworth, Jr. USN, Rachel R. Thomas, Rianna L. Thomas and great grandchildren Lucas Oti, Olivia R. Hall and Sophia L. Hall.

She leaves cherished memories to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Services will be held at a later date.
