Mae Bell Artis was one of 12 children born to the late Henry McKinley Artis and Elnora Jones Artis on April 5, 1941 in Capron, Virginia. She made her transition peacefully in her sleep on February 27, 2020 while in care at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She lived her early years and received her education in Southampton County, Virginia. She later moved to Washington, D.C. for a brief time before relocating to Norfolk, Virginia where she resided until her passing. She was employed at Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Hospital, and finally for Norfolk Public Schools in the Nutrition Services Department. She worked with Norfolk Public Schools until her retirement in 1998.
As a child she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Boykins, VA and upon her relocation to Norfolk she was a former member of the following churches: Antioch Baptist Church (Berkley), Antioch Church of Christ Holy Disciples (Norfolk), and Mount Lebanon Baptist (Norfolk). She was a longtime member of Mount Herman Baptist Church (Norfolk) under the leadership of Rev. Steven Lewis. She was an active member until her declining health no longer allow her to attend.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by eight brothers and one sister (George, James, Joe, Marbey, William, Leroy, Alvin, Douglas, and Christine). Left to cherish her memories are her children Patricia Artis-Square (Clarence), Rodney Artis (Rayniece) and Priscilla Artis-Lukoko; her sister Esmond Artis and her brother Calvin Artis. She is also survived by her grandchildren Aliana, LeNora, Patrice, Jordan, Brandon, Jessica, Erika, Joe, and DaShaunda, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
