Sunset: November 2, 2023

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Lorraine Beatrice Woods, 103, of Norfolk, Virginia began her eternal life with God on Thursday November 2, 2023 in her home on Lamp Post Drive in Chesapeake, Va. Born to William Jones and Wilhelmina (Stokes) Jones on December 18, 1919, the Jones family knew that a special being had entered their lives. The youngest of 5 siblings, Lorraine was known for being caring and kind. Anyone who met her would never forget her. Her smile and tender nature were shown to everyone she met. She left an imprint of love in every heart she touched.

Lorraine attended Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Va and graduated during the height of the great depression. Shortly after graduating she attended Norfolk Division of Virginia State College now known as Norfolk State University where she earned a nursing degree.

Lorraine worked a few years as a practical nurse before she met and married the love of her life, Earl Linwood Woods. They later relocated to New York City and resided for over 30 years. Through their union, they had 3 daughters and a son (Doris, Wilhelmina, Earline and Michael). As her family grew, she poured the same love on the generations to come as she did her own children. In 1989, the Woods family relocated to Chesapeake, Va. While in Virginia, Lorraine spent her days volunteering at St. Paul’s Church in their community thrift store which she loved.

Lorraine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother of 3 generations, aunt, cousin, and friend. She is preceded in eternal life by her husband (Earl Woods), 2 daughters (Doris Greene and Earline Alvaranga) and one grandson (Christopher Greene). She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Wilhelmina Woods of Chesapeake, VA, son Michael Woods of Chesapeake, VA, 5 granddaughters, Lisa Williams (Anthony) of Yorktown, VA, Kheela Walker of Portsmouth, VA, Anisha Walker of Chesapeake, VA, Azalea Alvaranga of Virginia Beach, VA and Amanda Alvaranga of Virginia Beach, VA; 7 great grandchildren, Khristopher Kennedy, Ashley Taylor, Garland Williams, Rodney Pringle Jr, Ryan Pringle, Earl Walker and Aiden Brown, and 3 great-great grandchildren, Khristopher Coleman, Kimberly Taylor, and Kendrick Taylor, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

To my beloved family… lean on the Lord because His Word never fails. Grandma was a believer; she was a praying woman and she was filled with God’s peace. As we celebrate her life and transition, I pray that we find peace in the fact that our sweet grandma is resting in His comfort and His care. Let your memory of her and your thanks to the Lord be reflected in the life you live and the love you share. Blessings…
