Linda Vernell Johnson

Linda Vernell Barnett Johnson, 77, peacefully went into eternal sleep with the Lord on Sunday, August 18th, 2024 at home surrounded by family after a short battle with congestive heart failure. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Linda loved family and anything family-oriented, she was a part of it. Whether it was a birthday, holiday dinner, family BBQ, or family reunion, she enjoyed serving and being around others. Her father started the tradition of hosting “ The Barnett Family “ reunions and she was happy to take up The Torch when he passed. They hosted various reunions when they were in Virginia and traveled to others when they were not local. She encouraged her brother’s children after their parents passed. She especially enjoyed visiting her husband’s hometown in Rocky Point, N.C. and eating the local shrimp.

Linda was born in Norfolk, VA on April 12, 1947, to the late Arthur Barnett Sr and Lillie Virginia Smith Barnett. She was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools System. Linda worked in various positions for The City of Norfolk including being a receptionist at James Madison Recreation Center, Norfolk Water and Public Utilities, Norfolk Parks and Recreation, and Calvary Cemetery, where she was known for sitting at the front desk and would always greet you with a smile, before retiring after 34 years of service. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Lillie Barnett, brothers of Arthur Barnett Jr and Ronald Barnett Sr. She is survived by her husband of 59 years Joe Johnson, her daughter Patrice Brown, and her two sons Julius Q. Johnson (Toni) and Javone A. Johnson. A brother Shelby Barnett and two sisters Paulette and Al. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews and cousins and a host of special cousins Diane Smith, Vance and Augusta Mae Everett, David and Brenda Johnson and family, Patsy Barnett and Family, Marva and Family.

Linda also loved The Lord and her Church family at St. Mark RZUA. She was an active member serving on various boards including The Bonner Ushers, President of The Special Projects Committee, and Treasurer of the Deaconess Board. She was also a troop leader for the Girl Scouts.

    I’m so sorry I’m just learning of the passing of Deaconess Johnson. I will definitely miss her smile and encouraging words…Not to mention the way she would praise the Lord at a moments notice in service. My prayers are with Deacon Joe and the entire Johnson Family & St Mark Church Family.
