Leroy Valentino Brown

Sunrise: October 9, 1958

Sunset: July 12, 2020

Leroy Valentino Brown, 61, passed away at his Home on July 12, 2020 to be with his heavenly father. “Teno,” as he was affectionately known, was born October 9, 1958, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Clarence Brown, Sr. and Beatrice Upshur. He was a member of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception and was a devoted member of the food pantry ministry. He grew up in Norfolk, Virginia and attended Tidewater Park Elementary, Ruffner Junior High, and Booker T. Washington High School. He was one of five children and loved his family dearly, especially his beautiful daughters. He had a passion for God and loved helping others.

Shortly after graduating high school, Leroy enlisted in the United States Marines Corp where he served as a Sous Chef. His loyalty, commitment, duty and selfless service led to numerous missions in defense of our country. He also received many awards and decorations, and was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corp after several years of service.

Leroy not only loved to lead by example, but constantly showed empathy and compassion towards others. He loved being on the move, similar to his Military career, which guided him on his new journey as a Chef in a number of establishments including the once popular Uncle Louie’s Restaurant of Ward’s Corner. This led to both family and peers recognizing him as a world-class cook.

He loved spending time together with his family; he is survived by his loving wife, Yolanda Eve Brown; his two beautiful daughters, Alyssa Nichole Brown and Kendra Leanne Brown. He’s also survived by his caring brothers Clarence R. Brown, Jr. (Doris – Huntersville, NC), Wayne de Ponton d’Amecourt (Paris, France) and Ronnie Clifton Brown (Norfolk, VA); sisters, Denise Yvonne Brown (Norfolk, VA) and Corlisse Debrina Brown-Norfleet (Norfolk, VA), a loving aunt, Dorothy Hudgins (Gilbert – Norfolk, VA), and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear on Monday morning that Mr. Leroy Brown had passed away. For the few hours every day that he was with us at our shop, he was such a positive force… hardworking, polite, good natured and always, so very kind. My very deepest sympathy to the Brown family.. may his memory be a blessing to you. His “family” at The Urban Bite will miss him.

The Brown family is in our thoughts and prayers. We knew Leroy through St Mary’s. His love for his fellow man and deep belief in the Lord was so readily apparent as he greeted you at the door. We are better people for having had Leroy in our life, even though it was for only an hour a week. His presence was felt throughout the week. And it will be in the future. RIP LVB. I met Leroy over twenty years ago when I worked at Uncle Louie’s. I remember his big booming voice, gentle giant presence and mega-watt smile. I also remember how proudly he spoke of his two little (at the time) girls and how much he seemed to love being their dad. While Leroy and I didn’t keep in touch, I thought of him fondly and hoped he was doing well. I ran into another former Uncle Louie’s employee today and he told me Leroy passed away. I am sorry for your loss. I plan to have a Mass said in his name.
