Leroy Hood, Jr.

Sunrise: March 4, 1946

Sunset: February 19, 2021

Leroy Hood, Jr. was born on March 4, 1946, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Leroy Hood, Sr. and Alice Tanner Hood. He was the second oldest of six (6) children.  In 1971, Leroy married Sandra, and they were blessed by two bundles of joy, Kwanza and Konya.

Leroy was a product of Norfolk Public Schools, where he attended Smallwood Elementary School, Jacox Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington High School. He graduated from Norfolk State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Immediately after graduation, Leroy moved to Mount Vernon, NY, where his career began as an accountant in the investment department at Republic National Bank in New York City.

He joined the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church and remained a member for over 35 years, where he faithfully served in many positions, including church secretary, treasurer, and driving the church van. After leaving the financial industry, Leroy worked as a teacher’s assistant and bookkeeper at the Fellowship of Learning School in New York City, founded by his long-time friend Willie Branch. He later worked as a Milieu Counselor for troubled youth at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls in Hawthorne, NY.

After retirement, he moved back home to Norfolk and gained part-time employment at Old Dominion University Perry Library, and ultimately found his place as an Adult Basic Education and GED Tutor in 2015 at The Garden of Hope Community Development Corporation in Norfolk.

Leroy became a member of Gethsemane Community Fellowship Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA in August 2011, where he faithfully served in several ministries including, but not limited to, Deeper Level Discipleship, Embrace Ministry, Evangelism Team, and Foundation of Faith Leadership Institute (2019 Alumnus) where he was a member of the mentor team. Leroy’s service did not stop here. He was also a member of the Gethsemane Magazine Editorial Team, I Thrive Youth Mentoring Program, Membership Services, Men’s Ministry, Noon Day Bible Study, and Vacation Bible School.

In addition to his volunteer services, for a host of events he baked cakes, including cakes for the girl’s youth ministry, Theta Chi. He absolutely loved baking cakes for the people he cared about. His passions were reading, baseball and football.  He was a huge NY Yankees and Giants fan. One of his memorable sayings was, “It is all going to work out alright”. He received many accolades and awards throughout his career and for his many volunteer services.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Konya D. Hood; sister, Patricia Hood; and brother, Reginald Hood.

I worked with Mr. Lee (as we called him at Old Dominion University Library) and really enjoyed our many intellectual morning conversations. He was a very intelligent, considerate, kind, thoughtful and generous person. He was well respected by every member of the Library staff. One could feel his peaceful spirit as he approached or entered a room. I never heard him raised his voice in anger, but always that smooth monotone voice he used to get his point across. My condolences and prayers of comfort and strength to his family during this time. I can assure that the pain you now feel in you heart will ease. May YAHWEH give you peace and comfort as YAHSHUA holds Mr. Lee by the hand and welcomes him home.

It has been my privilege to have worked with Mr. Lee at ODU Perry Library. We had many conversations about the goodness and blessings of the Lord in our lives. He truly had a servants heart. I really missed him when he retired but he still made time for us by dropping by for a visit when he could. He even stopped by for my retirement celebration to wish me well. Praying for the Lord’s comfort and peace to the family.

“Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you may be also. My prayers are for the members of the dearly departed. I pray that God will continue to bless each of you and give you the strength needed to heal. Hallelujah, all Honor and Praises be unto Our Lord and Savior
