Leonard Elston Mason

Sunrise: February 24, 1943

Sunset: August 17, 2024
Leonard Elston Mason, born on February 24, 1943, in Norfolk, Virginia, peacefully passed away on August 17, 2024, in his hometown of Norfolk. Leonard was the beloved son of Hazel Inez Mason and Rufus A. Mason.
He was married to his devoted wife of 44 years Everlena Mason, and was a proud father to his two sons, Leonard Mason and Adam (Tierra) Mason. Leonard was part of a large and loving family, including his siblings: sisters Altese Rosetta Mason, Alva Black, Hazel Bernett Duke, and Barbara Jean Harrell, and brothers Andrew Mason, Rufus D. Mason, Oliver Mason, Robert Mason, and Earl Mason. And a host of nieces and nephews.
Leonard retired from the Norfolk Navy Exchange in 2005 after a dedicated career as a truck driver. However, his true passions lay in his love for music. He was a talented musician who played the drums, saxophone, and keyboard, with a deep affinity for jazz and gospel music. Sundays were often spent playing the drums at Morning Star Baptist Church and Mason Memorial Church Of God In Christ. When Leonard moved to Lens Avenue, he would walk to Mt. Herman Baptist Church on the corner to enjoy services.
Leonard cherished every moment spent with his family. He was especially fond of taking them to the Waterside Marketplace in Norfolk to enjoy live music performances, particularly those by Joe Bonds. Family gatherings were a source of joy for him, and he loved spending time with his granddaughters Daejah, Demiya, Kaila, Mareshah, Mckenzie, and Brielle and great-grandson Demari.
Leonard’s legacy is one of love, music, and a deep commitment to faith and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Dear Family~ Condolences and prayers for comfort during your hours of grief, sadness and tears. I have fond memories of working with my NEDC Distribution Center truck driver. “Morning, Mr. Mason” as I respectfully greeted him when we clocked in for work. Mr. Mason was so humble and a soft spoken gentleman that treated everyone with respect. Memories are forever and a place where you can always visit when your loved ones are no longer here with you.
