Lena Mae Moton

Sunrise: October 30, 1939

Sunset: November 2, 2022

On November 2, 2022, our beloved Lena Mae Moton was called home to be with our Lord. Born on October 30, 1939, in Scranton, NC to Sarah and Harvey Burrus, Sr., she was the eldest of nine children. She was predeceased by her brothers Andrus Burrus, Lewis Earl Burrus, Harvey “Bud” Burrus, Jr., sisters Rosie May Williams, Mary Etta Thornton, and Sabrina “Deena” Burrus Brown. Throughout her 83 years on Earth, she was always a self-sufficient woman who could do for herself. She kept to herself majority of the time because she enjoyed her peace and solitude but was a great conversationalist once she started talking to you. She was always one to compliment others and made sure you knew just how beautiful you were as a person while highlighting your beauty.

Lena retired after working for 31 years and 3 months outdoors for Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She always jokingly said that they forced her into retirement after being late to work too many times. Lena was always one to lose track of time and be found in one of her favorite department or thrift stores shopping for someone or something. She loved her family, and it was evident through her acts of giving. She was always willing to extend a helping hand even if she didn’t have it to give; she gave from her heart. She would take care of any of her children-daughters, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching QVC and ID mystery shows along with spending time with her family. She never needed to go shopping for anyone during special occasions because she had rooms filled with gifts from QVC.

She attended church at Enoch Baptist Church within her neighborhood after buying her home-for years, her main goal was to purchase a home and she did it. In her younger years, she could be caught talking to you while drinking and holding beer in her mouth. She enjoyed listening to a lot of music artists including Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, and Whitney Houston. She always said she wasn’t the best cook, but the family loved her salmon cakes, oatmeal, cream of wheat, and of course her famous sweet potato pies.

These words cannot compare to the strong, independent woman that was Lena Mae. The matriarch of The Moton Family was a force to be reckoned with and had the best sense of humor. She liked things simple and uncomplicated. She would always encourage her loved ones to do things she never did and travel to places she could only dream of. She took pride in being a provider. She is survived by so many loved ones including her five daughters, Carolyn Evans, Sandra Moton, Jocelyn Moton, Laverne Moton (Ferlin Ophelia), and Cynthia Moton, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, siblings, Sarah Clark (Richmond, VA) and Richard Burrus (Virginia Beach, VA),  along with aunts Lydia Felton (Chesapeake, VA), Mary Alexander (Norfolk, VA), and countless other relatives and friends. Lena Mae Moton will be celebrated and missed dearly by all her loved ones.
