Sunset: March 7, 2022

Lawrence Renard Hamlin was born to the late Joseph O. Hamlin, Sr. and Sarah L. McClenon Hamlin in Norfolk, Virginia on March 22, 1959.  Lawrence was a native of Norfolk. He was a loving and dependent son, brother, father, uncle, cousin and friend. Lawrence’s smile, sense of humor and good nature touched many lives. He was known throughout the Hampton Roads area and the Carolina’s for his ability to use his hands. He was considered a “Jack of all trades.” Everyone relied on him to help them with projects no matter how big or small.

Early in the morning on Monday, March 7, 2022, the Lord saw fit to call Lawrence to his heavenly home. Lawrence was preceded in death by his sister Edith Hamlin. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 41 years, Ruthie M. Hamlin. Lawrence was blessed with five children Cary L. Murphy, Corey D. Hamlin, Carla L. Gatson (Timothy). Dontre L. Spencer and Renarda G Spencer. He was blessed with seven grandchildren, Shawn Murphy, Timothy Gatson, Jr., Jordan Gatson, Amrie Yancey, Caryana Murphy, Dontre Spencer, Jr., and Leah Harvin.

Survivors also include his six siblings, Joseph S. Hamlin (Joyce), Dianne H. Murphy (Larry), Joseph O. Hamlin Jr., Lionel L. Hamlin (Debra), Calvin E. Hamlin Sr. (Carol) and Veronica R. DeLoatch (Leander). He was also blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members.

Lawrence loved the Lord and his family. He spent his life helping and supporting his family and friends. He also served in many roles at the church. Lawrence drove the van, fixed the audio equipment, painted, made repairs, cut the grass and even cooked.

He will be greatly missed as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. We will truly miss his unique and infectious laugh, sayings, and many funny stories. Lawrence gave us memories we will cherish forever.

Cousin when I received the news of your passing it was a shock to me. You will truly be missed and all the memories will be cherished that where shared among the family when we all got together at Sweetmama, Sweetdaddy and Aunt Charlotte’s house. All the gatherings to eat crabs after crabbing and so much laughter. To the Hamlin Family know that you are loved and thought of during this time. Even though we are separated by distance we all are closer than we think.

I tell you, there’s two things I know to be true, Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal, and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. It makes me smile to think on these things. Brother Lawrence will truly be missed by the PHOC family. We are praying for his family and believing God for comfort and the mending of all hearts. 🙏🏽

    ❤️Rest in heaven Brother Lawrence…
