The second child born to Geneva and Levern Lee, Sr. LaVerne was born on September 6, 1963. She was preceded in death by her father, Levern J. Lee, Sr. Raised in Norfolk, VA, LaVerne graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1981. LaVerne had a love for hair and took cosmetology classes at Norfolk Vocational Technical School. Once finishing and receiving her credentials, she began working at Carmine and Anthony as an apprentice and under their guidance, received her cosmetologist license. LaVerne blessed many salons with her talents, such as Anthony and Company, About Face, G.Paxton Salon and J.C. Penney’s Hair Salon at Military Circle Mall until they closed. LaVerne was a licensed cosmetologist for over 30 years.
The winter of 2017, LaVerne was employed with Norfolk State University as a Front Desk Assistant. She also received an award “The Most Dependable Front Desk Assistant” in April 2019.
If LaVerne could have been “Ms. Spartan” or a member of “Hot Ice” like her daughter she would have. She would march around the house, proudly saying “BEHOLD!” with her green and gold baton. Man, could she twirl (in her mind). She loved rocking the Green and Gold!
Two of her proudest moments are her children receiving their degrees from Norfolk State University representing the first generation graduates of the family.
Leaving behind to cherish her memories: her children, Kendra Lareen Pinkney, Myles Alexander and Lander Coleman; her mother, Geneva A. Lee; three sisters, Teresa Schaffer, Renea Griffin, and Kimberley Green; a brother, Levern J. Lee, Jr.; granddaughter, Kahlani Coleman; two sisters-in-law, Melissa Newby and Shelia Eaton; three brothers-in-law, Ronald Schaffer, Willie L. Green, Jr. and Andre Eaton, Sr.; five nieces, Shayla Schaffer, Catherine Smith, Makyah Lee, Jayla Battle and Jade Lee; seven nephews, Willie “Tray” Green, III (wife, Mylira Green), Antony Griffin, Kobe Griffin, Andre A. Eaton, Jr., Malachi Washington-Lee, and Jiraiya Lee; she was also preceded in death by one nephew, Khalid Jayden Lee; two great nieces, Adoniyiah Green and Lennox Green; a great nephew, Aswan Green; a host of aunts and uncles, Rudolph and Janice Lee of Norfolk, VA, Judge Arthur and Josephine Bennette of Memphis, TN, Earlene Boddie of Norfolk, VA, George and Ernestine Adams of Cambria Height, NY; Dorothy Lee of Norfolk, VA; Roderick Adams (wife, Victoria Adams deceased) of Laurelton, NY; and a host of cousins and friends.

January 21, 2021 at 12:53 pmIt is very hard to accept that LaVerne is not somewhere lovin’ her family, laughing about a past memory or helping someone out who needs her. She is one of those special people that you don’t have to see everyday, but when you do, it is easy to pick the friendship right up. I loved her and I am so so very sorry for the family’s loss. I pictured her being a grandma and being around for a very long time. We were all blessed to know her and I to share a tiny piece of her life.?
