LaVerne Elaine Godfrey entered eternal peace on September 22, 2024. She was born on February 4, 1953, to the late Delester Brown-Godfrey and Robert Lee Godfrey Sr. LaVerne was educated in the Norfolk Public School system, where she attended Booker T. Washington High School and graduated in the Class of 1971. She also attended Norfolk State University for nursing school, however, despite loving nursing, she decided to go into something that kept her busy and going. LaVerne worked for TRT (Hampton Roads Transit) and ended her tenure in May 1995. In August 1995, she went on to continue her driving career as a school bus driver with Norfolk Public Schools, where she retired after 27 years.
LaVerne enjoyed cooking, going out to eat, and traveling to different places with her friends and to Louisiana to visit her daughter and grandkids. Most of all LaVerne was a diehard Redskins fan! Laverne will be remembered by all for her kind spirit and beautiful smile.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Delester & Robert L. Godfrey Sr, her brothers Rufus Reid Sr (Ruth) and Robert L. Godfrey Jr, and sisters, Delester McAdoo and Rosa Lee Edmonds.
She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, LaShawn Godfrey Monique Dempsey (Micheal), and son, Charles Godfrey. 11 grandchildren: Davidro, Shunikwa, Deyshawn, Zariyah, Jacoby, Tyionna, Jahmir, Micheal II, Nia, Kaniya, and Jahmauri; 4 great-grandchildren; Damarion, Ziyonna, Nova, and Cincere; her sisters Rosa Mae Alexander, Eunice Godfrey, and Constance Godfrey (Aubrey); 1 great grand pup Carti; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and a special nephew Bernard Simons.

October 10, 2024 at 11:03 pmOn September 22, LaVerne was handed a route but, this time she was not the driver. I was sadden to hear my friend and co-worker had entered into eternal rest. LaVerne was a great co-worker and team player for Norfork Public Schools Transportation Dept. LaVerne transported kids from sunrise to sunset parking her bus sometimes late at night after school games and activities. She left great memories to cherish and will truly be missed. LaShawn you and your entire family have my sincerest condolences and prayers.💔🌹
