Larrone Jefferson Hughley, 73, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Larrone, the son of the late Effie Bell, was born on July 31, 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the youngest brother to Robert Hughley, Tyrone Hughley, and Hattie P. Hughley, with Youngestine Wood as the baby sister of the family. He attended Carver High School and later went on to join the United States Marine Corps. He was enlisted in the Marines from December 30, 1968-November 30, 1991. He spent most of his career as an Intelligence Specialist, serving 23 years before honorably retiring as a Master Sergeant. Larrone later went on to hold several other titles, including a Correctional Officer at St. Brides Correctional Center, a Production Worker at Smithfield Packing Plant, and a General Laborer at Alutiiq. The titles he cherished most were Husband, Father, Granddad, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend.
Larrone was a devoted husband to Alice Hughley for 41 years. He had four children, Erwin Milan, and Preneka Burnham, from his previous marriage with Aline Milan, as well as Leah Travers and Nicosha Hughley from his union with Alice.
Larrone spent most of his time with his wife, children, and his grandchildren. No matter where he was, Alice wasn’t too far behind. Upon retirement, they were often found traveling together and never stayed still for too long. His favorite saying was, “I gotta go!” Although he loved his wife and children dearly, his grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. No matter where they were, he would be sure to be there for them. He showed up for their special events, volunteered at their school, made specialty lunches, and even created and sang special songs with them.
Larrone treasured spending time with family and friends. You would often find him in Atlanta, Georgia, with his sisters and extended family, as well as hosting yearly Myrtle Beach trips where groups of family and friends would come together. He enjoyed having BBQs where he could show off his mastery of the grill. When he officially retired from working, he went from “Bringing home the bacon to cooking it!” He loved trying new recipes to share with everyone and would regularly have the guys of his social club, The Mekong Delta est. in 2010, over to the treehouse to fellowship with him. Larrone was also a diehard Philadelphia Eagles Fan! On any given game day, you could find the guys of the Mekong Delta in the treehouse talking trash about the games! He held the title of “The Cornhole King” and would challenge anyone to a match, most times winning! Simply put, Larrone didn’t know a stranger and would do anything for those he loved.
Larrone J. Hughley leaves behind to cherish his loving memory his wife Alice Hughley; four children, Erwin (Alicia) Milan of Temecula, CA, Preneka (Alan Austin) Burnham of Chula Vista, CA, Leah (Eugene) Travers of Suffolk, VA and Nicosha Hughley of Chesapeake; eleven grandchildren, Sadie Milan, Alicia Milan, Christopher Milan, Martiesha Caines, Isaiah Milan, Kalindakay Thomas, Alliyah Travers, Anthony Hughley, Jaelynn Downing Travers, Ke’Dareon Shepherd, and Nyasia Hughley; two great-grandchildren, Cayson Randle and Jayce Milan; two sisters, Hattie Hughley of Atlanta, GA and Youngestine (Edward) Wood of Ellenwood, GA, a brother-in-law, Edward (Brenda) Downing of Columbus, Ohio, three sisters-in-law, Adra (George) McCoy and Colette (Marvin) Daughtry both of Portsmouth, VA and Crystal (Richard) Smith of Robersonville, NC as well as a host of many family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Effie Bell, two brothers, Robert and Tyrone Hughley, his mother-in-law, Sadie Jones, his brother-in-law, Robert Downing, and sister-in-law, Deborah Jones.

December 30, 2024 at 12:32 pmMy family’s thoughts and prayers are with you during your hours of sorrow. Larrone was a great friend and mentor during our service in the Marines. He made me a better Marine and unbeknownst to him, he impacted the way that I practice law. It deeply saddens us to hear of his passing. I wish I could have been there to assist you in this difficult time. Take pleasure in the fact that he touched many lives during his time with us. He will be remembered and never forgotten.
Peace and blessings.
