Kimberly Dion Elam

Sunrise: March 10, 1973

Sunset: November 4, 2024

On Monday November 4, 2024 at 8:33am, God sent his Angels to call home Kimberly Dion Elam of Chesapeake, Virginia.  Kimberly passed away peacefully at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia. She was born on March 10, 1973 in Halifax County, Virginia to the late Marion David Elam & the late Alma Winstead Elam.  She was a resident of South Boston until 1995, when she moved to Virginia Beach, VA with her children to be near her sister Tracye.

Kimberly attended South Boston Public Schools and she studied at St Paul’s College and at Danville Community College. She also obtained her Cosmetology license in Clarksville, VA. She spent her early years as a nail technician in South Boston and Virginia Beach.  She then prioritized the raising of her children by being a stay at home mom.  Once she transitioned back into the workforce she became the lead recruiter for Learning & You Tutoring Services.  Kimberly was the TOP recruiter 2 years in a row, ensuring students were registered in the state funded afterschool program to receive the academic skills needed to pass the state SOL tests. Once she learned she was becoming a grandmother, she devoted her time and love to her daughter Diamynde and granddaughter Skylar.  Kimberly was a staple in her South Boston & Chesapeake communities and was beloved by all. To her granddaughter she was fondly known as “Mia” and to others as “Ms. Kim.”

It was Kimberly’s lifelong dream to be a mother. She knew at a very young age, that her assignment was motherhood. To fulfill her purpose, she embarked on her journey of motherhood giving birth to her first son Rykeyn. Three years later, she welcomed her only daughter Diamynde and shortly thereafter, her second son Xameik.  With open arms, Kimberly and the children embraced the birth of her youngest son Nadir.  Although Kim would say she was “too young” and not ready for the “G” word (Grandma), she was ecstatic for the arrival of her first and only grandchild to date, Skylar in 2021.  Being Skylar’s “Mia” and being the primary caretaker while her daughter and son-in-law worked, gave Kimberly another level of love and purpose that she never knew she needed. There was nothing she enjoyed more than being “Mia” to Skylar. They were two peas in a pod…so much alike… in looks, style & mannerisms; it was a beautiful bond of love to witness. Skylar loved her “Mia”, and “Mia” loved her Skylar.

Early in life, she accepted Christ at Shiloh Baptist Church in Drakes Branch, VA. She also attended her grandmother’s church, Ebenezer C.M.E Church in South Boston, VA. Growing up, Kimberly sang in the Children’s choir & Senior Choir at Shiloh.  Although living in Chesapeake prevented her from attending in her later years, she remained a member until her untimely death. When she traveled to South Boston, she would always visit the grave sites of her Mother, Father, Grandmother & other family members and lay her carefully crafted floral arrangements.

Kimberly was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, & friend.  Her family and friends were the center of her life.  She was the backbone and matriarch of her family. She gave caretaking beauty. Whether she was attending school functions, advocating for her children, being their biggest cheerleader during sports games, sending them off to college, or being bedside for the birth of Skylar, Kimberly graciously gave her heart to support and nurture the lives of others.  She was known for her gracious heart & hospitality, angelic soprano voice and her comforting genuine and warm spirit.  She danced to her own beat and wasn’t afraid to live authentically in her truth.  She loved to cook, spend time with family and friends, and travel to places near and far. Kimberly was a horticulturalist. It was a beautiful thing to see her with Skylar. She loved to garden and loved to teach Skylar how to grow and care for plants. The Elam home was regularly filled with family and friends, delicious food, laughter, and good times.  She was passionate about passing down generational nuggets.  She didn’t just mother or parent, but she tried her best to remind herself and the children where they came from and encouraged them on their journey towards where they were going. Kimberly also enjoyed politics.  She tuned in daily to the various news outlets and stayed current on all political current events.  Boy would she have had a field day with the results of this last election.

Kimberly experienced a significant amount of tragedy and loss throughout her life. But her unwavering faith and God’s love lead her through.  She was preceded in death by her father Marion David Elam and mother Alma Winstead Elam, maternal grandparents Edwin S. and Florence Louise Winstead and paternal grandparents William H. and Mary J. Elam.

She is survived by (4) children: Mr. Rykeyn Bailey of Miami, FL,  Mrs. Diamynde Davis (Warren) of Chesapeake, VA, Mr. Troye Xameik Harris of Norfolk VA, and Mr. Nadir Elam-Alston of Chesapeake, VA; (1) granddaughter: Miss Skylar Davis; (1) sister: Ms. Tracye Elam of Miami, FL, (4) bonus sons: Tony, Laquan, Laquin, & Jordan; (1) bonus daughter Asaha ; a goddaughter: Ms Monasia Walton of Lawrenceville, GA;  her dear aunts and uncle; many, many loving cousins; and a host of other relatives and life-long friends, including the devoted John Alston.
