Karen R. Howcott

Sunrise: June 27, 1970

Sunset: June 30, 2024

On the morning of June 30, 2024, Karen Rene Howcott laid down her sword and walked into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Karen courageously fought a 10-year battle with cancer. She refused to surrender to or be held hostage by the disease. As she liked to say, “I’m tough like a Tonka truck.”

Karen found strength in her faith and her relationship with God. She attended Gethsemane Community Fellowship Church in Norfolk as often as her illness permitted. Karen never took a single day for granted. She saw each moment of her life, the good and the bad, as a blessing from God. Her steadfast belief in His grace and mercy gave her joy and enabled her to smile through her pain.  Karen’s daily affirmation was “The Lord ain’t through with me, yet. I got too much to do.” She lived out her faith by encouraging others who were also battling cancer. Karen participated for several years in the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure.

Karen loved spending time with her friends and family. She was a 1989 graduate of Indian River High School in Chesapeake, VA. She truly treasured the friendships she maintained with many of her IR classmates. She leaned on them throughout her illness and they never let her down. Karen’s family was her greatest source of happiness, especially her children. Seeing each of them graduate was her highest goal following her diagnosis. She was overjoyed watching her youngest child graduate in 2022.

Karen was born on June 27, 1970, to William and Lynda Howcott. Karen was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, Lynda Swan Howcott; her children, Camden Howcott, Caryngton Howcott, and Cristofer Howcott-White; her sisters, Cassandra Swan and Felicia Howcott-Easter. She also leaves to cherish her memory her aunts, Edwina Wilson and Margaret Mitchell; uncles, Thyral Howcott, Clarence Wilson, Jr, and Melvin Smith; niece, Madisen Easter; nephew, Mitchell Easter (Taquisha); great-nephew, Apollo Easter; great-nieces, Melody Easter and Royalty Granger; and a host of relatives and friends.

A special thank you to Barbara Floyd (Aunt Barboo), for her love and unwavering dedication to Karen these last 4 years.
