Julius C. Darden, Jr, affectionately known as Butch, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2020. He was born on April 18, 1951 to the late Julius C. Darden, Sr and Odessa Hamlin Darden, at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Veronica “Ronnie” Freeman. He was a 1968 graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He enlisted into the United States Navy in February 1970 and served four years active duty, which included one tour of duty in Vietnam.
Julius was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and retired after almost 30 years of service. During that time, he received his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University in 1983. Shortly after retiring in 2006, he decided that retirement life was not for him. After a few months, he reentered the workforce and was employed briefly by Sentara and spent the last 12 years at Costco. His hobbies were music, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory, the mother of his children and best friend, Carol Darden, one son, Justin Darden, one daughter, Kelli Bailey (Dexter), his beloved grandson, Jaxon Bailey, his niece Natalie Stell, a great-niece and great-nephew, Kennedy and Glenn Stell and a host of cousins, extended family and friends.

July 8, 2020 at 9:04 pmMy condolences to the Darden family. “Darden” as I called him was my supervisor in the Postal Service. We could always laugh together, but I knew when he meant business. It wasn’t hard to follow his orders because he was always kind to me. Years later, it was good to see his big smile greeting me at Costco. I will never forget that smile.
I pray that you as a family will grasp onto the Peace that God offers. May it comfort you in the months to come.
