Joyce Louise Smith was born February 9, 1939, in Norfolk, VA, to the late William & Annie Rogers. She was a native of Norfolk, Virginia. She attended the old St. Joseph’s School and was in constant contact with her classmates.
Joyce worked at several Norfolk Public Schools and retired from St. Helena in 1989. Joyce was married to the late Roger W. Smith for 67 years and through that union had six kids. She loved her family deeply with all her heart and enjoyed family time. Joyce took her grandma’s parenting role seriously. Upon retirement, she cared for her granddaughter, Shayla Smith, and great-granddaughter Soul’eece Greaux. She attended many events the grandkids were involved in, including graduations and special events. She was known for playing cards with family and friends. She was a member of the Ingleside Civic League and was always active at many functions. Everyone who came to visit her home was offered something to eat or drink, and you didn’t leave until you said YES.
Joyce Smith was predeceased in death by her parents William and Annie Rogers, husband Roger W. Smith, brothers William Rogers, and Wilbur Wright, and sister Corine Futrell.
Even when her health was failing, Joyce showed amazing strength. Joyce lived with faith, love, and hope. She continued to live on her own and fellowshipped with friends and family. She did not want to burden her family. She had an excellent memory and never forgot anyone’s birthday and always baked a cake for them. Joyce was a loving, thoughtful person who shared unconditional love for her family and all who knew her.
Joyce leaves to mourn her only living nephew, Garland Futrell, Jr., loving daughters, Evelyn (Beatrice), Linda R. Evans, and Sandra Smith; sons, Roger K. (Shelia), Donald (Shirley), and Wesley Smith; a special son-in-law, Michael J. Evans, twelve grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, and dear friends.

January 18, 2025 at 1:50 pmMrs. Joyce was such a Caring Person. I can remember, when we were young, we snuck to the Longmen’s Club, one Saturday night and Mrs. Joyce and Mr. Smith and their friends were there celebrating someone’s Birthday.
Mrs. Joyce, made us dance the entire time for Sneaking there, we had so much fun !!!!
Then they gave us a ride home. I have Always held on to that Fond Memory.
My Prayers are with the Family.
