Sunset: June 1, 2019

Joy Lynn Shorter was born on February 16, 1959 in Washington, DC to the late Luster Ree Shorter-Cook and the late William Ralph Shorter. She was the youngest of three children. She departed this life and entered into God’s loving care surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, VA.

Joy obtained her education through the District of Columbia Public School System. In her late teens/early twenties, she went to hair school, but her calling and gift was nurturing others, especially her family and friends. Until her unexpected illness, she was employed as a homecare provider with Farmer Home Healthcare.

Joy, affectionately known as “Pup”, had an infectious personality filled with humor. Pup loved to shop and was a true fashionista and diva. She also loved Anita Baker. You could often times find her listening to and singing Anita’s songs. She loved spending time with her family and she was always the caregiver for her granddaughters, nieces and nephews.

To know Joy was to love her. She was loving, kind and caring. She was a warm-hearted woman whose contentment rested in the happiness of her loved ones. She was well loved and cherished by everyone around her.

Joy leaves to cherish her memories one daughter: Jnele Shorter; two granddaughters: Kanier and Aubre’ Shorter; her father: Samuel Lee Cook; one sister: Angela Faith Shorter; two nephews: Desameux Shorter (Shannon) and Kani Shorter; two nieces: Ayanna Roberts (Damon) and Jennica Kirpes-Shorter; eight great nieces; four great nephews; one great-great nephew; her best friend of over 40 years: Janie Colbert; three goddaughters: Trynita Romeo, Mechelle Farmer, Jaquasha Williams; three godsons: Howard Bethea, Daquan Farmer, Corri Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
