Josephine Edgerton Brown received her wings on September 10, 2024 in Virginia Beach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victoria Wilder and William Henderson Edgerton, and daughter Jeryl Joyner. Affectionately known as “Jo,” by her family and friends, she was a native of Norfolk and an educator in the Norfolk Public School system, for over 30 years. She retired in 1987.
Jo graduated from Virginia State College in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science. She served her community by promoting self-assured thinkers, while in the schools, providing guidance and passion to her students.
Her other passions included helping the community through organizations, such as the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. These firms are instrumental in raising money for charities providing assistance and support through established programs in local communities.
Jo also enjoyed traveling. She was an avid reader, and was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, where she served on the hospitality and education community boards.
She leaves to cherish her memory of her children, James Flemmings, Judy McCoy (Howard), Kelly Brown, and Christina Kingwood. Additionally, her seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
