On March 10, 2019, God summoned one of his faithful children to eternity. Joseph Percil Turner was born on February 9, 1964. He was the son of Joseph Turner and Hilda Turner-Hall. Joseph Percil Turner was a native of Portsmouth, VA and attended I.C. Norcom High School. He was an outstanding athlete while attending high school. He was a state champion in wrestling and voted the Southern District’s Outstanding lineman in addition to 2nd team All-Tidewater offensive tackle. After graduation,
Joe played defensive tackle at Virginia Tech and attended the University from 1982-1987. Joseph was a part of the Virginia Tech Championship team that won the Peach Bowl in 1986. Joseph was a member of the fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. Inducted in the Theta Iota Chapter, he was known as the Mighty Zeus. The Mighty Zeus was successful in building Alpha men, individuals who seek the light. Joseph was loved, honored and respected by his brothers and other sororities and fraternities.
Post Virginia Tech, he met the love of his life, Ca Thoma Turner, through a mutual friend and they were married for 26 happy years with three children. Joseph started his career at Norfolk Southern in 1987 where he was employed as a brakeman and became a conductor. As of December 2018, he reached 30 years of service and mentored numerous young men on and off the job. In addition, he coached little league baseball in his hometown. Joseph was just like his line name, large and in charge, but in a humble way that put his family and his friends first. He did anything he could for his family and friends but make no mistake; mess with his family or friends and one would feel the wrath of Zeus. He was supportive and proud of his children and constantly pushed them to accomplish more and improve upon themselves, never settling for what is given. His kindness and empathy extended to the many young men he mentored and taught how to be men and a provide for their families and community through the word of God.
Joseph’s kind, funny, and strong personality will never be forgotten. On March 10, 2019, God summoned one of his faithful workers to glory. All is at peace now, there will be no more tracks to lay and all trains will forever be on time! My beautiful son, all pain has ceased, and all worry has subsided. Walk in the light of your magnificent new home and know that your work is done. We will miss you, all who love and care for you.
Joseph Percil Turner was preceded in death by his parents Hilda L. Turner-Hall and Joseph Turner, siblings Anthony and Valencia but is survived by his loving wife of 26 years Ca Thoma Washington Turner, and children; Jaylynn Wallace (Stephen), Emmanuel Turner, and Ca Thoma Valencia Turner. He also leaves to cherish his grandfather William Jackson II and uncles; Reggie Jackson; William Jackson III, and Oliver Jackson; mother-in-law E. H. Washington; sisters-in-law Antoinette W. Lee (Stanley), Bonita W. Pryer (Morechell) and a host of nieces, cousins’ other relatives and friends.

March 15, 2019 at 5:47 pmI want to express my most sincere thoughts and feelings for the passing of one of the best guys I’ve worked with for the last 30 years. I just retired and moved out of state and thought about Joe here in North Carolina. I was wishing I’d talked to Joe in person before I left a week before hearing the terrible news. Joe had an enormous amount of personal integrity and responsibility. Thanks Joe for being a great guy and great coworker. Sincerely, Mark Luey
