Joseph Foster McNair of Virginia Beach, affectionately known as “Joe” to his siblings, “Pop” to his family and “Joe Mack” to his friends, passed peacefully on November 7, 2020. Born January 22, 1935 in Norfolk, Virginia, he graduated from Booker T.
Washington High School. He was the fourth child of the late Joseph and Norma McNair.
Joe worked many years for the New York Transit Authority. After retirement in 1989, he moved to Virginia Beach, where he was an active leader in his Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, #47. He also attended church at First Baptist Church Norfolk, regularly prior to his illness. He loved spending time with his family; fishing, playing Bid Whist, reading and listening to old school music. Joe also had an artistic side and loved to draw and paint. Joe had a good sense of humor and would always ask everyone he met, “You got a quarter?”, never more never less. He also had a quote he would share with those he met “MDD”, Motivation, Determination, Discipline.
Joseph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Mavis; his sisters, Ruby Garfield, Ruthie Wallace and Eula Lankford; one grandson, Jordan McNair. He is survived by one sister, Norma Rich, Virginia Beach, VA; his children, Dexter McNair (Tish) of Virginia Beach, VA, Marva Roberts of Brooklyn, NY, Jodel Curtis and Jerome McNair of Richmond, VA; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Joe will greatly missed by his family and friends.
