Elder Joseph D. Porter Sr.

Elder Joseph D. Porter Senior affectionally know as “Porter” passed away at his home in Portsmouth Virginia September 3, 2021. He lived to be 84 years young. Porter was born on April 22, 1937 in Woodland North Carolina to Willie Mae and Spurgeon Porter. He lived most of his life in Portsmouth Virginia.

Porter was widowed by his first wife Vivian Moore Porter and was survive by his second wife Martha Ann Porter whom he lived to love for more than 31 years.

Porter lived his life doing what he loved, Long Hual Truck Driver for more than 61 years. His biggest passion above all things was his family and serving as the Pastor for more than 10 years at New Hope Christian Center located at 2113 Elm Ave, Portsmouth Virginia.

Porter was a charismatic, fun, loving people person. He never met a stranger. He had a smile that can brighten any room and lift your spirit. He never missed a opportunity to share a good dad joke.

If he wasn’t sharing a story about how good God is, he was talking about one of his 26 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, and/or his only great-great grandson Kemari. He left no one out, he had stories about and a love for his host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Porter is survived by his wife Martha Ann Porter and seven children Bonita Graham (Kenneth), Julian Porter Sr. (Lisa), Angela Roberts (Barry), Verdell Porter, Jacklin Hyater (Darryl), Cornell Holt (Armethia), and Sharonda Scott (Ronald). He was preceded in death by 3 of his children, Pam, Joe Jr., and Vivian, 3 grandchildren, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Porter was the baby but he took care of all his brothers and sisters. His infinite wisdom and contagious smile will greatly be missed by all.

    To Sister Porter words can not express how my heart is feeling right now. The fellowship services we all were apart of gave us nothing but love love love. May Elder Joseph and Elder Ray Jennings, Elder Q.Porter and Bishop Willie Porter and Elder Thomas Woodhouse. Fellowship in heaven as we did down here on earth. They all are truly missed.
