Joseph Cortez Evans

On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, Joseph Cortez Evans, Husband and Father of six children, passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital at the age of 64. Joseph battled with diabetes for many years.

Joseph C. Evans is survived by his wife Marshall Evans, and his six (6) children: Celecia Kirby-Cooke, Shamika Kirby, Jamaya Dunn, Cortez Evans, William Reid, and Willie Williams. He also leaves behind thirteen (13) grandchildren, Tyreik Kirby, Emanuel Kirby, TaeSean Jones, Anthony Roberts, Johnte Kirby, Jonathan Kirby, Amaya Dunn, Khalil Taylor, Christian Kirby, I’Asia Reid, Liam McCullen, Tony McCullen-Reid and Teon McCullen-Reid.

Joseph was a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War, and was medically discharged after serving with honor and distinction. He grew up in Brooklyn New York, and was one of five brothers and sisters born to the late Louise Daisy Evans and Edmond Cortez Evans. He is survived by his sisters Diana Brown, Vera Johnson his younger brother, Antonio Evans and a host of nieces and nephews of whom he loved dearly.

Aside from his service to the United States Army, Joseph aka “Slim” enjoyed playing basketball with the ILA Rockets where he earned the name “Garbage Man” as he was known by his teammates as the man with the cleanup plan. His ability to rebound and score was the team’s goldmine. Joseph enjoyed spending summers with his grandchildren in North Carolina and Norfolk Virginia. His heart was big, and his personality and laughter was contagious. Despite all of the pain Joseph endured in his bouts with the many ailments that he battled, he always managed to crack a joke and share a laugh. Joseph had many hobbies and things that he enjoyed. Spending time with his wife and family, making home improvements, and watching sports was his go-to. His favorite teams being The Dallas Cowboys, and The Boston Celtics. Wearing his favorite Kangol hats and dapper apparel were also at the top of his list. Joseph C. Evans (and his Wife Marshall Evans) were devout members of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, in Norfolk Virginia.
